I was diagnosed with Diabetes in Sept when I was admitted to hospital for five days with DKA after having a blood test at the request of my opticians, my symptoms were blurry vision, weight loss, thirst, running to the toilet every ten mins and no energy at all to do anything else. My HbA1c was 112 (I don’t fully understand when this is).

I was told by the Dr he was unsure if I was type 1 or 2 but he started me on insulin and said he would review it when I next saw him. I have been taking Levimir am and pm and NovaRapid 3 times a day with meals. I saw him again at the hospital in Dec and he said I would stay on the insulin and spoke to me about type 1.5 I am due to have more test and see him again in August.

So the thing that has me a little confused, I had my latest HbA1c result today from the nurse at my local GP today, it was 5.2 which I was told is very good. After reading a lot on this forum during the first few weeks I made a lot of changes and have done everything I can to get this under control (was not easy at first). BUT my GP nurse has decided that even though she had a recent letter from the Dr at the local hospital in front of her (she printed me a copy) saying that I was Type 1 and he would like me to try Levimir once a day instead of twice and I was to continue the NovaRapid as I have been that I am actually Type 2 and she is taking away my insulin and giving me Metformin.

Is it possible that she is right and the consultant got it wrong?

I’ve only just got the to point where I feel I can cope with this and I control it rather than letting it control me and now I don’t mind admitting im more than a little scared of going back to how I felt before diagnosis.

I don't know your full history so I can only guess but I would put a huge wager on your consultant being correct rather than the nurse. I would see if you can speak to your consultant or another doc. Hope you get this sorted soon.

Get back onto the consultant ASAP, IMHO and see what he thinks.I would be a bit reluctant to go for the opinions of a "bog standard, general practice nurse" over a diabetic specialist.
What does your GP think? It will be HIS neck on the line if his practice nurse over-rides the specialist!

same as fergus, phone your consultants secretary for either a telephone chat or urgent appointment to explain what has happened. Sooner the better, especially if you have been having good readings with the insulin.

Get onto the consultant. As for a GAD a cpeptide tests to determine your type. Don't let the nurse override the consultant! As Fergus says your GP is responsible even if he's asked the nurse to deal with you.

Follow the consultants advice not the DN. If you had the latest HBa1C test done while you were on insulin then it would, of course, show a fairly good result (that's why you have the insulin). If so your DN is completely wrong. You can't diagnose T2 whilst on insulin. It sounds like your consultant knows what he's doing so follow his advice
