I have been diagnosed T2 since April last year. I also have high blood pressure and the side effects of the pills for this has caused the diabetes. I am not coping very well with this. I have now been put on metformin as my Hba1c level was 9.6 I am having side effects to the metformin. I want to stop taking these as I cant stand the side effects. I am very worried as to long term damage of taking these pills I feel angry and confused and not coping with the situation at all. It doesnt help that I am a confectioner and working with sugar and chocolate every day.
Does any one else have these feelings of anger. I am getting fed up with myself and I'm sure my doctor is as well

Anger is a normal reaction
Don't worry,you can harness it
Metformin is a pretty safe medicine in the long term and most people do adjust to it in a few weeks.
It's worth persisting with it.
You may find that reducing your carbs, specially the sugars :P helps you.
Not easy in your trade, I'm sure. Perhaps that's where you can use your anger. turn it against the sugar.

Hi Dk.
As a fellow T2 for 11 years I know exactly what you mean, been there, t-shirt etc.
I too have BP/Cholesterol issues so know the sort of cr*p they can cause. You say your pills gave you Diabetes - I would be surprised at that. What pills are they?
The most likely cause is probably the diet instructions you may have been given to reduce blood glucose levels. I spent years sticking to the NHS healthy eating doctrine, put on stones in weight and ended up taking an ever increasing cocktail of drugs, including Metformin at the highest dosage. Since changing to a low carb diet my dosage of Met has been reduced a lot and BG readings improved. that could be one area you could adjust.

Side effects of the Met are not particularly bad, in my experience as the dose is usually increased gradually. Obviously we all take to things differently. Can you give us some idea of what meds you are taking and dose etc so we can better advise.
hope we can help later with more information.
It does get better - take it from me.

thanks for reply. It took a while for me to get a pill that would reduce my blood pressure and not have side effects to it. I was eventually put on bendroflrazade and nefepadine when I was diagnosed with this I was training 3-5 times a week (Karate) and my diet was good. I was never given diet advice with the blood pressure. and the diatitian has told me I have to eat carbs at every meal. Could this be what is causing the bloating and gas, I was so bloated the other day i looked pregnant and had terrible heart burn My doctor told me if I dont take the pills there is more chance of me having a heart attack than a person who smokes. I've been on the metformin for 2 weeks I hoped the stomach problems would have sorted its self out by now.

Hi dk.
I knew your answer about diet was going to say that. That diet advice nearly killed me (triple heart Bypass ) I now ignore any dietician completely. I am not going to presume to advise you what to do but I am sure you will get loads of advice about this from people on here much better qualified than me. Listen and learn. It will improve your life.

thanks I think I will try the low carb route. It has helped a lot just reading other peoples questions and answers. I think I have learned more about diabetes today than I have in the last year.

You certainly wouldn't be the first to benefit from the low-carb 'magic bullet'. Chances are you'll find it will lower your HbA1c and your blood pressure simultaneously. Not to mention cholesterol, weight, moods, sleep patterns, energy levels etc. etc.

Also not eating carbs at the time you take your metformin may significantly reduce the gas.

Failing that, the slow release version may be more user-friendly

Dropping the carbs will very probably also improve your blood pressure and lipids, "metabolic syndrome"
