Hi all, I’m aged 62 and what I thought was reasonably fit and healthy with a good diet and now a newly diagnosed type 2. Don’t know how long I’ve been diabetic but the the more I read online and go through my previous few GP visits things do become linked. I also have ulcerative colitis and cysts on my pancreas and have been losing weight(70 odd kilos with my kit off), reading the web these conditions appear linked to diabetes. I have to say it’s a very rapid learning curve trying to balance out what can and can’t be eaten to satisfy both conditions. But hey ho here we go.

Type 1 is common with other autoimmune conditions. Type 2 is common with metabolic syndrome type things of non alcoholic fatty liver, obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. There is another type caused by damage/surgery etc to the pancreas type (3c) that tends to behave more like type 1 but isn’t autoimmune in origin.

As you have lost weight and have autoimmune conditions how did they decide you were type 2 rather than 1? Sadly there are still some drs that think type 1 only happens to kids. Not at all true and may need tests to be sure as quite a lot of type 1 are initially misdiagnosed as type 2 in adulthood

Having T2 does mean that your hormonal response to certain food and drink is likely to cause higher than normal levels of blood glucose.
Having colitis and any issues with your pancreas will also effect that response of insulin you need to offset the glucose derived from food and drink.
If You want control of your blood glucose levels, you need to discover which food and drink do this. It is usually the carbs and sugars you are now intolerant to.I
There maybe many reasons and causes of T2. Finding the right balance of dietary treatment is recommended.

As far as what to eat I have no idea of your needs with UC or the pancreas issue but this will give you some idea of what t9 eat for a type 2 so you can look for things in common

The fact that you have lost weight may mean that your pancreas is not producing sufficient insulin and you are losing weight due to your body burning fat in order to provide you with energy. Furthermore there is a possibility you have pancreatic enzyme insufficiency and if this is the case you will not be fully digesting food and benefitting from the energy it contains.

I’m certainly not suggesting this is the situation in your case, but I had lost an awful lot of weight when first diagnosed, but it took almost 4 years, and a chance observation from a CT scan for another condition to spot my pancreatic cyst and prescribe appropriate medication. It might be worthwhile asking your GP if there may not be a possibility of chronic pancreatitis.

So as a route for the UC, since last Boxing Day I have omitted one food/drink per week of my then current diet to see if there was a slight chance of change. Nothing seemed to make a difference(maybe not a long enough period of time of abstaining). I’ve had another MRI on my pancreas and awaiting results on that. The UC is now being treated? with Pentasa and 4 weeks in no change as yet. The diabetes is being treated with metformin and the balancing act for what to eat has begun. Reading the side effects of the metformin ….excessive gas both ends….diarrhoea……just what I have been having with the UC. Back in for another colonoscopy end of the month so if I get a good diagnosis that could be one link less in the chain.
