Constipation

Many posters on here will blame it for just about everything

Seriously, yes it can do that just as much as it can cause the opposite affect on your digestion.

For some people the side effects are minor or do not last too long, but for a few they are severe unfortunately.

The regular caused major diarrhoea the slow release caused constipation and then explosive diarrhoea for me.
I gave up and changed my diet to very low carb.

Thanks I appreciate the reply. It is just things have altered and I am trying to find a cause.

I have only been Metformin XR500 for a week, no sign of the scours that I was warned about by the pharmacist. I am not as regular as I was either, seems to miss a day then all good for a day.

Must be the change in my diet as I have cut back on some stuff.

Plenty of gas though. :D

It gave me very bad diarrhoea, ordinary metformin and SR metformin, so after 4 yrs I gave up on it and no problems since.

You do not have to be diabetic to have any bowel changes... Nutrition and fibre does have a large significance as well to all people...

With constipation it is worth talking to GP about if you are so bad that you get a bowel movement less than one a week! Or if it has significantly changed for you....

However it could be that your fiber content has increased or decreased if changing eating pattern.

Some people do find that having a hi fiber diet helps with constipation but some (like me) can only be helped with low fiber.

It could be medication but it could be changes in foods...

i was on metformin for 8 days before i got diarrhoea then 4 days of constipation now back to normal for 3 weekn now
although not good today as had a change of brand a few days ago so that may or may not have something do do with it today

Yes Metformin made my husband constipated for a while but it did not last to long then he was ok

Different brands of drugs can have a huge effect but chemists (my example Lloyds) cannot guarantee which brand you will get!! Ie I asked for a particular brand of Letrozole tablets which are for cancer as they had less side effects. They said, they can request but not guaranteed as they have to take what the wholesaler has purchased and sends! I haven't checked tjough if all chemist like independents and Boots are the same...

Many ladies with anti cancer hormone tablets find differences in brands for side effects so I guess the same would apply to diabetes meds...

Does Metformin cause constipation

your doctor should be able to direct you on eating them properly and even if you've been constipated, you are probably advised to not continue to eat it and the doctors will eventually helped you recover from being constipated. all meds are suppose to make you feel better. the medications are meant to treat each symptoms, there has never been a meds that can be like 4-in-1 unless you only eat panadol or paracetemol which won't help lol like ever...
