Contradicting diagnostic tests!

Hi there!

If you read the morning reading thread you may have read I had an ogtt yesterday. I've had the results back from a confused gp! Fasting 5.1 and 2hours later 4.8. I had a hba1c of 60 in January when diagnosed. Two very reliable tests with 2 different opinions!

It's being referred to a specialist... Anyone experienced similar?

(Slowly breaks open the cake. Just in case!)
 
Was it a 2 hour test?

They look quite good figures. The fasting one is very good.

It may be that you are like me : primary insulin response shot but secondary insulin response comes in like a train and mops up that high blood glucose.
If you graphed the OGTT , the initial spike would be high, then the BG would be mopped up well within the 2 hours!
 
nosher. After you have the fasting test they they give you a glass of glucose drink then you sit in a corner for two hours and they test again.

Collieboy I think you may be right. I did test myself at 1hr and it was 12. Although my own meter reading at two hours was 7.4 so much higher than there's!

I'll do more 30 and 60 min testing while they investigate!
 
Did they take half hourly tests on your blood glucose levels?

Did your docs say why you were referred?

I think you digest foods quickly and the high spike is what they are worried about.
 
Hi. They're not worried. They're confused! It seems to be very unusual to have the results that way round. People pass the a1c and fail the ogtt but not usually the other way around.

They didn't test at an hour. Just 120 min. I suspect that's what will happen next. I don't think my 1hr test showed too much of a spoke to be honest. But we'll see.

Yes it is unusual as your first hba1c was high and your getting normal fasting levels.

Will be interesting to find out why!

They did the a1c when they were doing routine tests for my gout drugs. There were no uric acid results in my blood work. I wonder if some random guy had been told he has gout :)
 
Random thought here - maybe you spike particularly badly with certain foods.

Wheat shoots my BG incredibly and disproportionately high.
But sugar less so. And I tolerate potato much better than wheat.

Could be. Potato, bread, ffruits, porridge, even chocolate haven't spiked me. I had a little rice for the first time today. 5.5 after two hours. Going to give pasta a go soon enough!

Ultimately if diabetes is confirmed it won't change my new lifestyle at All. I'll be healthier with diabetes than without it!

Well the gp heard back from the specialist. Either I have diabetes or I don't have diabetes! Glad that's all cleared up!

It does seem to be a very unusual Situation. And the Worse case seems to be its under excellent control and in remission. Another hba1c test to follow

I would imagine that more tests will be ordered for you!
