Hi .I' wondering about the use of cook in sauces .Specifically Aldi's "Chilli" and "Thai green sauce" ...I know in an ideal world i'd make my own but these are family favourites and both come in at under 10carbs per 100grms and under 12 when divided by 4 for the family .I'd be using lean mince and chicken .Clearly I can't have rice with them so will replace with cauli or cabbage but would we still class these as reasonable low carb ? I'm aiming for between 75/100 carbs a day and no meal with more than 35 carbs total.

I use the schwartz chilli con carne sachets and with chilli beans, toms, mince etc the whole thing, excluding rice comes out at 18g of carbs.

Thanks Dibbles that's good to know :)I'm keeping a file on low carb cheap but tasty meals .

Haven't had much luck in finding a simple low carb curry I can make myself yet, it needs to be not too ingredient heavy for cost as well.

We've never used any of these, and do our own from scratch, but the real answer is to cook, eat and test. If it's something you might like to consume regularly (sounds like it is), it would be worth testing before, then an hour as well as two hours later (or even every 30 minutes), so that you really get a handle on what's going on.

Are there any sweeteners in the listed ingredients? As you're learning, not all carbs are equal. Indeed, we all probably have slightly different intolerances.

You're welcome.
Schwartz have a lot of information on nutrition and carbs using their sauces with typical recipes on their website.

I make my own curry, with curry paste and curry powder, fried onions and mince + tin of toms as the base then I add pineapple/sultanas/apple. I have no idea what the carbs are in that though

Sounds delicious !
Was a bit shocked to discover 1 cup of onion contains 11grms carb and 12grms in my tinned chopped tomatoes  Then I thought it through and realised that would be split four ways in a recipe so not as horrendous as I'd first thought phewww.

We normally rotate them every couple of weeks so not too often .
No Andbreath ,just looked and was pleasantly surprised that a lot of the ingredients are natural and recognisable
.....not often you can say that about processed sauces :)

@Susiespearish

Have a look for Pataks, Tikka Masala. concentrated, in a tin, 283g, 6.9g per 100g, so 19.5g per tin, serves 4. (or 1 in my case, as I like the sauce strong), so less than 5g per serving if you're normal, plus whatever you put with it. I did fish, mushrooms, leek, pepper, and 1/4 of a sweet potato, no rice, so for me that's low carb, (others may disagree), but the sauce is low carb, and tastes good. (I didn't add the cream, and tomatoes they suggest, but B&M do tins of coconut milk for a few pence as well, which keeps better, and personally, I think tastes better. (warning, I haven't checked the carbs, so don't buy without reading the label, like I have, I will check later though)
Even better I got the sauce at 59p a can from B&M, so it won't break the bank for a meal for 4.

I use Pataks curry pastes in jars, a lot. A quick check of the cupboard revealed 4 jars with 6g, 11g, 17g and 26g carbs /100g.

Considering I only use 1-2 tablsp of paste to make 4 portions, I consider that negligible carbs.

And I add coconut, lots of veggies and/or butter which slows down absorption even more, so in my wee low carb alternate reality, it is all good...

I use Pataks. No notable spike for me.

Pataks it is ...thanks all :D.Looking forward to trying this tomorrow .The slim water rice is bearable for a rice alternative and I discovered if you dry fry those Zero Noodles with no carbs they taste ok !! especially if you mix in some spices and veg .
