Could I have diabetes?

Hi im new here and I have an issue. Im 13 and when I was about 11 or 12 I had a blood test for diabetes, they never got back to us as we moved 2 days after in a emergency. I have been having SOME symptoms of type 1 diabetes: tiredness, increased thirst, genital itching and frequent yeast infections (im going through one right now) but I have not been peeing THAT often but I think it has increased. I believe my dad had a form of diabetes but he died before he got diagnosed. My grandma has diabetes but im not sure what kind. My mum wont let me get a test, she thinks im overreacting and I probaly am, but I cant go to the doctors without an adult and all of my reletives live about 100 miles away from me. What should I do? Am I over reacting?

(I have not startedmy period yet I dont know if its relevant or not)

tell your mum or a teacher that you need to see a nurse or a doctor
someone will be along to advise you better in a minute ...........
 
I doubt it ,you may be over reacting ,when you had tests if there was anything to indicate diabetes the hospital would have contacted you ,but if you wait a few minutes im sure one of the more experienced members will be able to advise you best ...........
 
Hi Lily, we can't really say if you have diabetes as you need tests to verify that. Can you not sit down and explain to your mum you're worried and just to put your mind at ease can you both go to see your doc ?

Thanks for your replys. My mum hates doctors. She never lets me go. When I went to the hospital when I was 11 or 12 like I said I moved house 2 days after, so we changed our contact number we gave them. Should I just leave it? If I Did have it 1or 2 yrs ago something bad would of happened by now, right?
 
hi lily, well done for finding this forum and being brave enough to ask these questions, my advice is to talk to your mum again, if that dosent work a teacher? try to explain to your mum that you have asked here at this forum and we think its worth getting checked out in case your right, its very important to get checked out again as catching this early is very important, ask her to come and talk to us if you think she will and we can try and convince her its a good idea, you take care of yourself, good luck and well done
 
Hi LilyRae! You seem to be resourceful but troubled young woman without the support anyone would expect from your only parent.

Your mother is suspicious of doctors. So am I, but not to the point of avoiding them. We need doctors. Even doctors need doctors when they get ill.

What you need, in my opinion, is to find one or two or more adults you can trust and talk to them. Keep it secret from you mum if you need to. Do you have any friends who´s parents or older siblings you feel you can talk to? School nurse? Teachers? Look for them, there are some good people out there.

I think your mother should put your health first. From what you have told us here I am not sure you can trust your mother to take the responsibility she should for your health. It is a shame, it is unusual but it happens. I had similar experiences with adults when I was your age.

Regardless of the 100 miles geographic difference between you and your relatives, do you have any contact with them? Can you find support? Go and visit in the holidays?
 
Hi Lily, are you aware of any significant weight loss over a short period of time (are your clothes suddenly very loose-fitting). The thirst experienced by an undiagnosed type 1 diabetic is like nothing you can imagine. Drinking water is ALL you can think about. I remember drinking constantly, nearly every minute. Going to the toilet was so frequent that I didn't want to be far away from one and it would be a full bladder's worth of liquid every time I went. If you think you are experiencing this sort of thirst and urination you will need to speak to your mum. To be honest if you do have diabetes you will have such weight loss that your mum wouldn't be able to ignore it.

Don't panic, see how it goes. Are you on half term next week? If you are still worried after the school holidays speak to a teacher if your mum won't listen to you. It is better to be safe than sorry after all.
 
Hi and welcome. Do speak with your Mum again. It is possible that you have T1 but it could be something else. If you have no luck with your Mum you might be able to ask your local pharmacy to do a finger prick test but it's possible they would need your parents permission. If you know anyone else who has diabetes you could ask them to do a finger prick test but be careful to not cross-contaminate blood samples. If you do start feeling quite bad do drink lots of water and ask your Mum to take you to the GP or A&E. Yes, sudden weight reduction is one indicator of T1.

Does your mum have a best friend or do you have an Auntie you can speak to? They could then explain to her.

If not find the nicest teacher at school and tell them. That is what they are paid for!

You should be able to see a doctor or nurse without your mum present, all consultations are private and confidential and you're mum cannot be told by anyone at the surgery that you have or have had an appointment. I don't think anything has changed since my sister was young and needed to see a doctor a couple of years ago. My apologies if there is now some sort of law etc that prevents teenagers seeing a doctor in private but I really don't think this is the case.
I do obviously want you to talk to your mum again and try and get her to understand your concerns but if you get nowhere then seeing the doctor should always be an option
 
Aww sweetheart your so brave for finding this website and expressing yourself.
If your that worried about it please emphasise to your mum how you feel and how worried you are.
I has blood tests a few years ago and mine were fine. And now I'm diabetic.
Do you know if anyone else I your family has diabetes as it is common to run through families xxxx
