I went to my doctor today and to my suprise he suspects I may have diabetes. Apparently I have many of the symptoms, and he has booked me in for a fasting blood test on Wednesday.
I know very little about diabetes, apart from what I have just read on this site. So please forgive my ignorance.
I have had the symptoms the doctor is suspicious of for four months and have never had a "hypo", could I really have diabetes? I am 25, with a bmi of 21, and have no history of diabetes in my family.
Any opinions welcomed, although I stress I will still attend my blood test regardless, I am just curious.
I am not

Loren,

What type of symptoms are we talking about? You would not have had a hypo unless you were Diabetic and taking some type of medication. Any further info you can give will help.

Of course you must attend the blood test - it is something that you have to find out whether or not you are diabetic.

Nausea, fatigued, thirst, drinking 6-8ltrs of water a day, itching on stomach and chest, peeing a lot (but then I would with the amount of water I drink). my thoughts were pregnant but four months after first getting symptoms with negative tests, no growing bump and still having periods this seems highly unlikely.

Hi loren and welcome to the forum, no one hear is a doctor so we are unable to diagnose you only a doctor can do that

----- but-----

Here in the UK diabetes is usually diagnosed after one or two blood tests usually undertaken at a hospital after a referral from your GP, this test is also sometimes undertaken by GP's in some areas.

Also most pharmacists/chemists now offer a free diabetes check which is just a simple finger prick blood test that will show immediately how high your blood glucose is at that time which can be a good indication. This test is not definitive and can only suggest that you may be diabetic so if it is high you will be no doubt be directed to your doctor for a more accurate blood test and a formal diagnosis.

Hope this helps, and good luck :)

Thank you all.

I guess what I was really hoping for was for someone to say that It was unlikely to be diabetes as I hadn't had any fits or any drastic symptoms. I will only have to wait a couple of weeks I suppose for blood results but I am just impatient. Dr made me feel like he couldn't be bothered to think of an alternative so must be diabetes.

Thanks again.

I'm so surprised he didn't at least do a finger prick test on the spot. It isn't a definitive way to diagnose diabetes but it can give a really good clue! THEN you can go on to more formal testing. It's probably better at ruling diabetes in than out. For example if your doctor pricked your finger and you had a blood glucose level of 25, then you've got diabetes - end of. All that would remain then would be to find out which kind. If your level was, say 8, then that might or might not suggest diabetes. If it was 4, then diabetes is much less likely.

If it were me, I would go, right now, to a pharmacy or supermarket and get them to do a fingerprick test. If I had diabetes, especially if I was young and therefore more likely to be type 1 and needing insulin, I'd want to know now, not in two weeks! Your symptoms sound suspicious but blood testing is the way to know for sure.

simple answer yes it is possible.. you have some of the classic symptoms of diabetes the thirst fatigue etc .. but by all means its not a definite.. so whatever way you need the tests to find out for definite and then you can be treated... even if its not diabetes you need to find out what.
