HI everyone,

I am 25 years old who is currently living in Somalia. I noticed before two months that I am diabetics. My younger brother who is only 14 years old is also diabetics for the last 4 years. He is dependent on Insulin injection on daily basis. However, my case seems to be less severe as the blood sugar does not go up as my little brother. I am currently using a herbal treatment, an extract from what is known as Bitter melon. This has helped a lot. I would like to be part of this forum to share with you my very little experience in diabetes and gain also from your side. What i want to know is, if there is any methodology for Identifying which type am I. I am really confused and my doctor told that I am type 1 or Insulin dependent diabetes but I have ignored that. This is because, my situation is totally different from that of my little brother. If I walk say 3kms, my blood Sugar level can decrease up 65 mg/mol. Please advise on this. should I go with doctor's prescription of Insulin Injection or continue with my Herbal treatment.

you will soon know if your doctors diagnosis of type 1 is correct as your blood sugar will increase and it will do so relatively quickly.......

its possible you may be type 2 or type 1.5.........

type 1 is where your insulin producing beta cells are destroyed by your own immune system, this is also the case for type 1.5 but the cell destruction is much slower, type 2 can be a combination of not enough insulin and a decrease in insulin sensitivity.

what was your diagnosis like, usually, as a type 1, you would need immediate hospital treatment as the onset is quick..........

type 2 and 1.5 come on more slowly.....

ultimately it should be OK for you to ask your doctor to go into more detail about your diagnosis....

Hi. AS you have a family history of T1 and you are young I would suspect Late onset T1 (LADA or T1.5). It can come on at very different rates. You may be able to do without insulin for a while and just have tablets but I suspect it will progress. Do make use of a meter to track how it goes. Have alow-carb diet to keep the blood sugar as low as you can. There are two tests that can help determine T1 i.e. The GAD test and the c-peptide, but these may not be readily available in Somalia? The first test looks for anti-bodies and the second your insulin level. In the UK these tests are not always carried out when they should be. So, in summary insulin won't do you any harm and will certainly control your sugars. I'm afraid no herbal treatment will help T1.5 in the long-term
