Was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after having pre diabetes for years and before that gestational diabetes.
My head is spinning with everything ... I try to read help pages and advice but I can't concentrate and their is so much conflicting advice I don't know what I'm doing anymore.
I keep going back to the fact that Iv failed in keeping diabetes away.

My mum died of complications of diabetes, she lost her legs and her kidneys packed up to until finally her heart couldn't take anymore. And I feel that I can't stop the same things happening to me to.

I started on metformin a week ago and was told to in increase the dose after a week which was yesterday.
I really need to lose weight my BMI is 34.61 but don't know where to start ... I keep seeing posts about low carbs and I have found that carbs make my blood sugars rise loads

I can't find the motivation to get my head round my meals. I think it's been tattooed in my brain that I'm to have carbs with every meal so now that I'm trying to have them I feel so deprived.
Iv done every diet their is ... Weight watchers slimming world Herbalife ... And now it's just a big mass of mess in my head xx

Hi, hmmmm the motivation is in your post, you don't want to repeat your mums experience, now its just a matter of choosing the path, not choosing to try, but choosing to do it, all the information you need is contained in this forum, and where to start? thats the easy part, it starts with the next thing you put in your mouth and ends in many many years time after a long and happy life without any complications, just choose, make a conscious decision that right now was the turning point, food is just a way of fuelling your life, put in the right things and you will get the answers you want, its not going to be easy or hard, its going to be what it is, your lifestyle.

ok so, what the next meal gonna be? I'm already excited for you :)

Lol Thank you xx
I need to go shopping but I think tonight it's going to have to be Tuna steak out the freezer, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower cheese .... But not sure how I would make the cheese sauce as it would normally be made with some flour ?

Cheese sauce, buy some philly, melt it in a pan with some cheddar and a bit of cream, season it and pour it over your cauli. Stick it back in the oven.
Go easy on the carrots, veg that grows above ground is better for you because roots contain more starch.

boil the cauliflower until its just turning, then drain it well (i push the water out using a small cereal bowl through a colander), then pop the cauliflower into a blender( or use a potato masher) and a little double cream, then back into the saucepan, add some cream cheese and some grated cheddar and a little parmesan, heat gently and voila! cheesy cauliflower mash

I echo everything Andy said. Listen to him. He is a wise man. Stay posting and browsing on the forum. That in itself is good motivation. Best of luck

Oh I hadn't thought of cream ... That's all the years of weight watchers and slimming world telling me to limit it ......

Can anyone help me with counting crabs ? How many should I have how do I count them etc xxx

Some great ideas thanks so much xxxx

Hello tweety pie,

So sorry to hear about your mum. It's all very scary and we don't really know our future...
But I do believe that you can take some control and improve or balance out your health in a way which is best for you...
So much information to read and choices to make, hope you see things more clearly soon ....you can do it ....

I am sure we all have days and times when we feel blank and loose direction but we have the courage to start again ....never give up, you sound like you put a lot of effort into trying ....

Take care , best wishes Kat

Counting crabs? Lol Lol.

Many of us on here use myfitnesspal, either the website or the phone app. Also an excellent carb counting book is Carbs & Cals from Amazon.

do you have a smart phone? theres an app called myfitnesspal there is an online version too if not but the app has a bar code scanner thingy that makes shopping easier, you record everything you eat and it works out the carbs and everything else, it takes a little while to get used to but its very very useful

how many? thats a huge question and you will have to test your bloods to get an answer, if it dosent send your bloods up (more than 1.0 Mmol or so) then its the right amount, if your bloods rise, cut back some more :) all takes time, but it doesn't matter, if your doing the right things, you have all the time in the world

you test your bloods right? if not you must!!

One of the best things you could have done is come on here. There are so many nice, supportive and knowledgeable people here.
I've learnt a lot in the past couple of months and I've been type 1 for 23 years.
My dad was type 2 for 30 something years and looked after himself. He died with all his toes and minimal diabetes damage because he looked after himself.

It is possible to minimise / reduce / avoid complications but you need to make your health a priority. This is not selfish in any way shape or form. Your family will thank you for it.

Keep reading and posting on here. I'm not medically trained but LOW CARB HIGH FAT does improve sugars.
CAULIFLOWER is amazing because it's a good substitute.
SUGAR FREE JELLY AND CREAM is to die for.
The feeling of normal blood sugars - better than any cake.

And you are allowed to get upset about it - try not to use food for comfort unless it is low carb.

Look forward to hearing your progress

HI. Yes, it's confusing out there with so much conflicting and I'm afraid incorrect advice. Diabetes is a condition where the body can't handle carbs properly and the glucose they are converted to hang around and increase blood sugar. By reducing the carbs you eat you can help reduce blood sugar by a large amount. Many of us set a daily target of, say, 150gm, or even less. I assume you have a meter? If not it's an essential piece of kit. With the meter you can check how your meals affect your blood sugar 2 hours afterwards and this will guide you on the daily amount of carbs you can tolerate. Protein and fats are fine and, of course, veg and some of the fruits. Yes, the obsession with low-fat is everywhere and based on very suspect data. You should find that weight reduction will follow a lower-carb diet. It's best to make this diet a lifestyle change and named diets are best avoided as it's not so easy to keep them going long-term due to cost or the need to visit a group etc

I bought myself a monitor because my GP said they don't provide you with one anymore .... I did have one from when I had gestational diabetes but he wouldn't give me the strips and to buy them was expensive ... So it was better for me to buy a new one that the strips weren't as expensive xx

Since I started on the metformin my tummy looks like I'm pregnant ... I'm not windy but I have had the runs ... Does anyone else suffer with this ? X

yes this does happen to some people, it may get better but if it carries on, there is a slow release version the doctor can put you on which seems to suit people better with regard to tummy troubles

Glucophage if i spelt that right

I just burst into tears reading about your dad .... I really hope I can prevent this happening to me as Iv not managed to prevent diabetes .... I didn't mention my sister has diabetes to and has had quite a few operations on her legs up to now .... It seriously turns my stomach .... Sorry if I sound depressing xxx

Cant you just have the Tuna steak and the Veg? (no cheese)

That would be a perfect meal for me as long as there's a few types of veg.

regards

Hi, Tweetypie.. Like you my mum had diabetes. She lost her legs on separate occasions and the diabetes was the cause of death on her death certificate. Despite all that when I was diagnosed I was like a headless chicken. Nothing made any sense and I thought I ate reasonably healthily. My doctor told me very little. I went on the introductory course but it was like someone speaking a foreign language to me. I began to think I could not crack this. Then I visted my local healthy living centre. They put on courses about diet and lifestyle tailored specificly for diabetics. So if there is one near you why not get in touch and see whats on offer. I found that talking to like minded people helped and this forum is very good for that. I wish you well
