Cut Sugar In Cakes, Chocolate By 20%, Industry Told

Dr Alison Tedstone was on Today on Radio 4 this a.m. spouting her usual guff.. They reckon that children are eating 3 times as much sugar as they should and their recommendation to the food industry is to cut sugar by 20% so what will that acheive realistically. How about cutting sugar by 66% Dr Tedstone..

Unfortunately sugar and salt too, are preservative in foods. Children's tooth extractions in the under tens have increased.

Sugar, a preservative? So why isn't it in M and S humous?

Ah I think this could be a case of no added sugar in the aioli! I could write to M and S!

Yes it is true, sugar is a preservative. I don't why it isn't in M&S humous either, so it would appear to be not in all foods.

  • Overview. Preservatives are substances, natural or synthetic, that help keep foods fresh looking and tasting longer and prevent them from rotting or deteriorating too quickly. ...
  • Salt. Salt has been used as a natural preservative since ancient times. ...
  • Lemon Juice. ...
  • Pickling. ...
  • Rosemary Extract. ...
  • Sugar.

You could also email M&S and put your questions across :)

20% is a start and better than leaving things as they are @bulkbiker

Are you surprised? Dr Tedstone's name keeps coming up when it's anything to do with the government and nutrition.

I'm not surprised her name comes up as she is Public Health England's "nutritional" specialist.. just sad that they are so in the pocket of the food industry that their "recommendation" is so lame..

In an interview with her I saw on TV she gave me the impression she was not prepared to consider any alternative to the Eatwell Guide and was trying not to get involved in any controversy, just waiting for her pension.

Yes I haven't forgiven her for her reaction to the National Obesity Forum paper on low carb diets.. and that she doesn;t seem to be open to new science.. just pushes out the state of play on repeat.

well yes but it's a recommendation not a diktat so could well be ignored and probably will be..

I don't know, there was a news article this morning saying the food manufacturers have embraced the idea of a 20% reduction in sugar.

It's the small steps towards the future that will be, hopefully, a big leap.

Absolutely RRB, couldn't agree more.

Sadly the majority get what the majority want. Until the majority say NO we don't want all this **** in our food the suppliers will continue.
It's supply and demand.
They'll supply it, whilst we ( uneducated populous) demand it.
As diabetics we are heads up and are more knowledgeable, we just need to spread the word.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-39433143 - And cut it out completely M and S in your savoury products. The other day I bought aioli ie garlic mayonnaise and to my horror it contained sugar .....

When you check it's quite amazing how much unnecessary added sugar there can be in many savoury products however they're packaged - and it's not just M&S that's guilty of this either! I'm well aware that it can be used as a preservative, but in tinned food?? :wideyed:

My preference would be to have this insidious sneaky hidden sugar banned where possible, before attacking the obvious sugary culprits, where people (should?!) at least know that they're actually eating the stuff.
