Sorry this maybe a long post, I have injured my back fairly badly and been given morphine and various other drugs , these have given me really bad d&v mainly diarreah, to the extent that I am struggling to eat at all, I'm drinking water, my question is how do I manage my tablets ? I take BolamynSR 1000 mg x2 usually with my evening meal, I don't know how relevant this is but we have moved and up to a month ago I was taking Metabet SR same dosage same time of day.
I am assuming that the drugs given for my back have caused all this d&v, could I be wrong? Also how should I manage taking my tablets, can I take one in the morning and one at night? I will be going to speak to my doctor but can't always get an appointment quickly. Many thanks, Sally.

I think that the Bolamyn is our old friend Metformin - if so I don't think that you need to worry about not taking it - especially as you aren't eating. It is a slow acting drug which lingers in your system for some time, and it doesn't affect blood glucose levels, just the release of glucose from the liver - actually that might be a bad thing at the moment, you need your liver free to act in order to keep your BG stable.
It might be best to concentrate on taking the meds for your back, and as long as you don't indulge in anything heavy on carbs leave the diabetes meds alone for a few days. Without food your BG should be fine, and the least of your worries.
I hope that the back pain subsides rapidly, having had problems myself -

If you're taking Ibuprofen, that could be responsible for the diarrhoea. When I had back trouble, I told my GP that one or other of the tablets I was taking was giving me diarrhoea. He said it would be the Ibuprofen and marked in my file that I couldn't take it.

I wasn't bothered by vomiting but I seem to remember reading that some people react in that way to some morphine based drugs.

Hopefully a Type 2 can help you with your medication question.
Hope you feel better soon. Back trouble takes a lot out of you without the tummy problems!

Morphine and pain meds normally slow the stomach/colon down and give constipation.

Metformin is more likely to be giving diarrheoa. As for vomiting this isnt normally associated with metformin but could be from morphine based drugs.

Best see your GP and ask for the slow release metformin again.
