I am currently on the waiting list to do the DAFNE course. Has anyone attended this course and how did you find it helpful? I am doing it to get more knowledge on carb counting and so I can eventually get a pump :)

Attended DAFNE 2 months ago and very good course although I didn't learn a great deal it's good to chat to other diabetics.

I found it very useful, and as Mo says, good to get to know other diabetics around as well

The nutritional sections were a bit noddy for me and had absolutely no recognition that "normal eating" may mean different things to different people. The exercise section was also very basic for me, but not for others.

Some section though were very helpful, such as the sick day rules, and the sections on basal and bolus adjustment. I've now taken my basal doses down by about a third on the back of the course.

Great course. Much like Dave and Mo I'd learnt most things from reading and using this site already, but the sick day rules were good.

If nothing else you meet new people and can feel "normal" for once

The best thing I ever did was going on the DAFNE course. I had been type 1 for about 14 years when I went, was about 4 stone overweight, didn't have particularly good control and wasn't testing regularly.

In the 12 months following the course I lost 2 stone without trying, almost halved my insulin and my HBA1 improved. A further 4 years on I have lost another 2 stone, have taken up jogging and have good control.

It gives you much more flexibility on what and when you eat. It changed my whole way of looking at diabetes.......instead of eating what you need for the insulin you inject you inject the amount you need for the food that you are eating!

Hello Hannat1
I did DAENE 10 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. It gave me control over my diabetes meaning I could eat when I wanted to . I felt listened to rather than patronised by specialist doctors who were just too prescriptive. I too previously hated testing . . but now i test frequently . . at least 5 times a day and I could not be without my testers. . Since doing DAFNE I have not had a serious hypo.

Did the DAFNE course around 4 years ago and found it extremely useful.

Yes I did it last summer and previously my life was being ruined by severe night hypos. Since attending the course I have got them under control and spent time in a great environment with people who actually understood what I was going through. Just do it and enjoy it. You have nothing to lose.
