I've been a diabetic since 1977 and thought I knew all that needed to know about my condition. On the 12th November this year I attended the Dafne course held at the diabetes centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The details the nurses,Doctors and dietitians gave us was fantastic.I found out for the last 16 years my doctor at my GP surgery had told me to take 140 units of #uick acting insulin through out the day. After the course I now take. 50 units through out the day.I have been overdosing nearly 3 times over what I should be on. I also found out if you do take too much insulin hypos become more frequent, hypo awareness becomes less and weight gain due to taking too much insulin as well. The course helps you eat better, gets your diabetes better controlled and helps you get in touch with different doctors if you have related problems due to your diabetes. My advice to all Type 1 and 2s diabetics.newly diagnosed and diabetics like me who cannot be bothered until problems happen,go on the Dafne course. You will be amazed how much you will learn about your condition

Sounds like you learnt a lot glenmoray, it doesn't matter how long you have diabetes you never stop learning :)

btw, the DAFNE course is for type 1's and not type 2's.

No it's not offered at all hospitals, others hospitals have created their own cheaper versions of it, which doesn't always come up to par with dafne

Why is it only offered to T1's

Because is purely because it's about learning how and when to adjust your insulin dose to maintain control of your levels..

The T2 version is called DESMOND...

The DESMOND course for T2's is purely for those who are diet+exercise and/or medication via metformin. Insulin usage is NOT covered on the DESMOND course at all.

There is an additional course for T2's for those who are also on insulin.
