Thank you all. No readings as yet as I can't see a nurse due to covid.
I've ordered some books for ideas and will start testing my bloods from tomorrow.
I've been eating, bran cereal or wholemeal toast with wholebut peanut butter for breakfast. I have been eating berries, melon and oranges but also bananas and apples so I'll reduce those now thanks or the heads up. Meals are mainly meat or fish with veg or salad. Snacks, nuts and snack a Jack's. Also been eating fat free Greek yoghurt honey flavour?
Can I drink flavoured water?
Also how do I get the app to show me notifications? I didn't know you guys had replied until I went in to check.
This whole thing is blowing my mind. I need to lose weight and need to have a liver check now too.
Good morning, and a welcome from me too. You've already been given the Nutritional Thingy's link, so I'll not go there again. Just have to mention that Snack a Jacks are high in carbs too, so yeah.... I know, just about everything you've always been told is good for you, turns out to be absolutely horrid for a diabetic. Who would have thought it eh? When you check a label, check total carbs, not just "of which sugars", as all carbs turn to glucose once ingested. Go through your cupboard and check the "healthy" stuff, and be amazed... On just how unsuitable it is. (And since fruit doesn't come with a label, more often than not:
https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/fruits ). So while you're busy processing the concept of having a metabolic condition, you also have to re-learn food, which is a big change and you don't have to get right overnight, okay? Just read, learn, and go over your usual groceries, see if there's still that's got less carbs in to replace the usual fare, or if there's stuff that was fantastic all along and you thought you couldn't have.
Forget fat free, as fats are actually good for us diabetics. It slows down the spike of any carbs we do eat, fills us up, contains vitamins and minerals, and does NOT spike blood sugar at all. So it's the full fat greek yoghurt, and really, full fat anything, you want to go for. Take it from someone who's been eating bacon once or twice a day for almost 4 years now, lost weight, lowered cholesterol, and got rid of her non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (that usually comes with diabetes, so don't worry if your liver turns out to have issues, this diet will fix that too.
It's all connected.) and morbid obesity. That said, you don't have to take the word of some random internet person for anything. Get yourself a meter, it'll tell you exactly what is going on in your body and whether certain foods agree with you or not, without trying to sell you on any dogma.
It's a steep learning curve when you've just had a shock diagnosis, so give yourself some time to sort things out eh. And do get the Dr. Jason Fung book, The Diabetes Code. That thing's a lifesaver.
Good luck,
Jo
