Dangerous advice

Have you received incorrect advice about carbohydrate in foods being ok, as it's 'natural'?

I've just had an interesting discussion with a demonstrator, then the manager in Costco about Liptons Iced Tea. The demonstrator had been given information stating that this was suitable for diabetics, despite a clear label showing that it has nearly as much sugar as coke!! Poor woman, told me that it was ok, because it was 'natural' sugar. Luckily the store manager knew a bit more, and said the information would be changed. Have just emailed Liptons, to make sure!! Any one else had similar incorrect advice given them?

Visiting a care home, I refused fruit juice because of the sugar. The Assistant assured me that it was OK - she drinks it & she is diabetic...

The most outrageous for me, was my stay in a diabetic ward in hospital.
Orange juice, mashed potatoes, low fat yoghurt, cereals like Weetabix, rice crispness, biscuits and toast with spread!
Totally unbelievable.
No wonder, the country is in the middle of an epidemic!

I gave up Lipton's Iced Tea some time before diagnosis when I read the label on the bottle and realised just how much sugar was in it. I din't consider that level of sugar as good for anyone!

That stuff they call diabetic jam gets me !

There's a whole load of stuff out there , that is of no use to or of danger to diabetics , perhaps it's time to make the government do something about it , perhaps another flag on packaging ?

Perhaps the cooks in Hospitals need a course on Diabetic foods

My first DBN meeting I was ordered to eat more carbs, white meat and oily fish ( I am a vegetarian!) I was also told to drink fizzy drinks, rather than water ! Also to eat only low fat products... Think she was trying to kill me !

She obviously didn't succeed, luckily for you she is about as good at muder as she is about diet advice!!!

I drink lots of water when hot out but do like a diet pepsi as well

I had to add a little something to this discussion, for what my opinions are worth, I have a 9 year old son who was diagnosed last year. The advise given out by the DSN etc is excellent, whoever we insisted on leaving the hospital before the week was up because the food on offer was not fit for purpose. Since then both of my children and myself have been diagnosed with Coeliac disease and whilst in hospital for our endoscopies we were all offered gluten rich food afterwards !!
I am lucky enough to belong to a forum set up by my sons allergy specialist and we gather to discuss all sorts, and at our last meeting I told him plus the others at the meeting ( dietician , pharmacist, nurses, doctors other mums) , that the food in hospital available for diabetics / coeliacs was appalling and that for such a large teaching hospital this should not be the case. They have promised me to review procedures/ diet sheets / availability/ communication.
We shall see. But I know that by the very nature of the disease and my sons age that it is only a matter of time before I will be testing out the hospital food again!
I know you all know this, but until we are able to educate the masses then we will always be up against it and be given obscure and often dangerous advice.
Rant over, sorry to go on,
Lucy

Last time I was in hospital, they actually forgot to feed me... I'd asked for the "diabetic option", and they simply didn't have owt so forgot to provide anything at all. I'm rather poor at confrontation (Aspie, alas) so actually had a rudy hypo before they sorted things.

Moral of the tale?

Don't be a twit like me: make a fuss, scream and shout if need be- but make sure you are at least fed!

Good advice.

MarkE and Arab Horse,
I am sorry to hear about your hospital visit. I am also sorry that to be cared for properly as a patient in hospital was not a matter of course. To have to scream and shout is not fair especially if you are unwell anyway. I will now always go into hospital fully armed with the essentials. But let's hope that the hospitals start to improve their care re food ASAP.

I hate confrontation

I just went to the cafeteria and had bacon and eggs!

Yes but only from an NHS dietician.
And yes but in my case from my practice diabetes nurse: the usual carbs with every meal nonsense, and to eat raisins instead of sugary food if I wanted something sweet. Which even in my fairly ignorant state just after diagnosis, I was prepared to take with a (low carb!) pinch of salt...

Brew some tea ,Fresh Lemon or Limes,Mint, Ginger and Tumeric to name but a few and last but not least a Fridge. How difficult is that

My (diabetic) husband was recently in hospital for hip surgery. His menu indicated that the apple crumble and custard was suitable for a diabetic. What can I say?
