Dapagliflozin help

A week ago I saw my endocrinologist and she put me on 10mg of dapagliflozin a day. She said I did not need to be on insulin anymore. I also take 2x 1000 mg of metformin a day. Before the dapagliflozin I was was taking 1000mg of metformin and 35 units of levemir, and my blood sugars were always around 5 at fasting and between 4 and 8 the rest of the day. I have been on this medication for a week now and my blood sugars are around 14 most of the time. The lowest I had in the past week is 8.9. I eat less now and pee about 20 times a day. I also have never felt this ****** in my life before. I constantly feel thirsty, tired, like throwing up. How can I bring my blood sugars down? I don’t have any insulin left or a prescription for it anymore. Should I just stop eating completely? I eat 50-75g of carbs a day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 'classic' response would be fewer carbs - my personal limit is about 40 gm per day now as I try to lose more fat, but I was at no more than 50 gm for some time, whilst my BG levels were coming down after diagnosis.
However - I am uneasy about the side effects of the dapagliflozin and suggest that you contact the prescriber with a full rundown of what you are experiencing plus your BG levels.

Have you read the side effects of dapagliflozin? Some of your symptoms could be related to that drug. https://www.drugs.com/sfx/dapagliflozin-side-effects.html and possibly also your higher than previous blood sugar levels.

Dapagliflozin works on the kidneys to try to prevent them from filtering out the glucose and sending it back to the blood stream by making it excrete the glucose in your urine.

It sounds to me as though you will have to consider reducing your carbs some more. Many of us find that 50g to 75g is too much for our bodies to cope with.

Here is the thing though. I’m not really overweight. Before the new medicine I managed ok eating around 90- 120 carbs a day with only 35 units of levemir and 1000mg of metformin. Now I take twice the metformin and eat less and my average daily bg has been going up by about 2 a day. Also my cholesterol is too high and my blood pressure is too high. I am on blood pressure medication also. I am 43 years old and am very physically active. As much as I hate doing the insulin injections, I feel they should have left it as was. I also found out at my last appointment that my kidneys are starting to not function as well anymore.

I have made an appointment to see my doctor on Thursday. I must say, I am loosing faith and trust in my doctor, diabetic nurse and the endocrinologist. Everyone thinks I have had diabetes for a very long time (10+years) but I was just diagnosed last July after having an eye appointment with the eye doctor. When I first was diagnosed my kidney functions were good, but now they are reduced. The endocrinologist told me that forxiga would be good for my kidneys, but after everything I have read I’m not convinced at all. I’m just not sure anymore, and ready to give up. Today I had about 3 liters of water and 2 coffees with a little milk in them and my blood sugars went from 12.1 this morning to now 17.6. I haven’t eaten anything all day. Plus with the increased blood sugar, my blood pressure is also very high. I’m not sure what’s wrong with me or why, but most medications they give me seem to only have negative effects on me. I keep telling them I think there is something else wrong but none of the doctors listen.

When you see your doctor on Thursday take along a written record of your blood sugar levels - and also your meter - as proof of what you are saying. Stand firm and hold your ground with him. It is possible you should be having the C-peptide and GAD tests to see if there is a possibility you may be T1. Also, print off any evidence you have that dapaglifloxin should be restricted in cases of impaired kidney function. Good luck. You must be very worried.

I’ve had 2 C-peptide tests done since being diagnosed with diabetes. My diabetes nurse thought I was more of a type 1.5 diabetes as the first test came back slightly low. I had the second one done a week before I saw the endocrinologist and am not sure what it was. I know my blood sugar that morning of the test was on the low side (4.2). Not sure if that could effect the reading or not. I have the ACCU-CHEK connect, so I can track my bg on my phone. Last night for dinner I had 30g of carbs and decided to take some novorapid. Before forxiga i could take 4 units of novorapid and it would equal out the carbs plus drop my bg just below what it was before eating. I took 8 units and it barely dropped my bg at all.

I was put on dapagliflozin after taking canagliflozin. It sent my levels through the roof too, I tested over a month and went back to my dr and was changed to 25mg empagliflozin and 10mg aloglipton and it’s stabilised.
