Dating & Diabetes - how to get the two 'D's' to work togethe

Re: Dating & Diabetes - how to get the two 'D's' to work tog

I would just be honest, it doesn't need to be a big deal. My current boyfriend found out because his sister (who knew me) told him before we started talking. I told him myself before we went on a date as we chatted for a week or so before the first date.
On dates it has always been slipped in with the inevitable 'so, tell me about yourself.'
If they're curious and want to know more, they're a potential second date

Sunshine kisses,

It is a no brainer! It's Diabetes not that you are a mass murderer! Just say I am carb intolerant and they will start telling you all about their "issues" . That way you have covered your bases. Just make good choices as to your food order and you can eat as Normally as your "friend". I eat out regularly, normally order a Grilled Fish dish with a side order of garden salad and Balsamic vinegar. Easy Peasy! For desert I have Blueberries with Greek Yoghurt, on the sly add 2 sweeteners. There are no restrictions with Diabetes, it's merely a lifestyle change! Chin up Babes - be blessed.

Hi.

I would tell your dates if it comes up in conversation. I've had it since my teens so anyone I dated / went on dates with I told if it came up, for example if I didn't want a dessert as they were all full of sugar, or like others have mentioned if they asked me to tell them about myself.

In my experience it never scared anyone off but just made them curious.

Good luck on the dates

Thanks peeps - some really great tips! I feel better about just chilling and seeing what happens, thank you as always for your wise words...

The cause of arguments between myself (query type 2, diet only) and my lover (type 1) is choosing what we eat. He wants carb heaven and can just adjust his insulin :/

Make sure you can merge your dietary needs and he understands the effect of foods on you and you are not being 'faddy' or 'fussy'

Good luck x

I agree honesty in the best way, & no hiding it, there is no point in deceiving anyone. Be confident with it, people say confidence is a turn on (right guys?), so I don't see why it can't apply to this, especially if we might struggle in other areas. Doesn't mean we don't want someone we like to come swooping in with a sugary snack sometimes when we need it though .

I think just be honest & confident in yourself. It's a good conversation starter, & if they aren't interested then they are not worth your time

On your first date make sure you go to a restauarant serving a lovely Smoked salmon salad, sip a spritzer, engage him/her in conversation then workout if this one is worth sharing any of your secrets/life with before enhancing their life with you're being

Sunshine_Kisses I hope that you have found some useful advice. I would agree it's nothing to hide or be afraid of. If it comes up then talk about it, if it doesn't then don't.

Reading some of the comments on this post made me laugh, really cheered me up after a rubbish job interview yesterday.
