Dating?

Hi guys,

I split up with a long term partner recently and although not quite ready to jump into anything, I'd like to hear if anyone has experienced dating after being newly diagnosed and how you handled telling someone new? Is there a way to meet other single diabetics?

Diabetes is not my life but I can't deny it's a big part of it. Reactions from friends to my diagnosis were not supportive so I'm pretty nervous about meeting anyone new!

Any advice really appreciated!

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
Have a look in the diabetes Uk magazine, "Balance".
there are groups and things of that kind.

Hi Lizzie7

When I was free and single :D hang on a sec ................... happy days

At first I did not tell people, then one day after seeing someone who I thought was quite nice and that I had been seeing for a while, dumped me and the reason is (I found out later) she had seen a couple of syringes in the fridge and decided I was a junkie. :!:

So after that I just told everyone straight away, usually on a first date I would excuse myself and say I just need to check that I am alive and check my BG, that usually broke the ice and if they were interested in finding out about the diabetes I knew they were OK, if they were negative or depending on comments made I would know they were not worth my time, after all your partner needs to be someone you can trust to look after you should you require it.

Not sure finding another diabetic is a good idea, I once lived with someone who had Narcolepsy and co-ordinating our mood swings was a nightmare.

Thanks for your answers guys.

I'll have a search through Balance.

I guess it's best just to be open and see what happens...

Hi lizzie,

I am in the same position and split up with a long term partner about 4 months ago.
I have jumped back into the dating game - literally! I dont mention my diabetes at the start but see how things progress. I have had a few dates with different guys and usually mention it when we go for our first dinner.
The last time was with a guy that may possibly be a keeper! He took me to the Oxo tower restaurant for dinner and I proceeded to test my blood before my meal arrived and then injected once it was in front of me. He took it all in his stride and was actually quite interested in it all. 6 weeks on and we are still getting on like a house on fire.
I was quite nervous about the whole Diabetes side of things at the start of the dating process but now I just carry on as normal - although I do always now take a bottle of Lucozade to bed with me - if you get my drift!!!!
Anyway, good luck with the dating................ I am having a ball!

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
Hi sandie.
Great post........
although I do always now take a bottle of Lucozade to bed with me - if you get my drift!!!!!

One hesitates to ask why you would recommend a bottle of Lucozade at bedtime......however,
if I cast my mind back through my old grey cells.......I think I understand where you are
coming from

Hiya
Just thought I would share my experience when I had split up from a long time partner I started dating again and didn't even consider my diabetes to be an issue or problem and when I told my date I had diabetes he was fine about it it was only a few weeks later that he told me 'I really like you even though your not perfect and have diabetes' that I realised two things it may not be a big thing to me but it is to others and that he wasn't the one for me! I have now been with my current boyfriend for two years now and I think I told him on the second date and his response was 'oh my dad and gran have diabetes' and has always been really good about it all.

Good luck with the dating. :D
