Hello,
im a newbie to this site but i have had type 1 for almost 35 years. I have always had good control, been on a pump for about 8 years but recently i am finding it really tough to get good control. Im using the freestyle libre to get continuous BG but cant seem to get my basals right. Ive gone through the process of setting basals by eating no CHO but a few days later my BG is all over the place again suggesting something needs changing.
A big area of variability is my morning readings, sometimes i have high and rapidly climbing BG in the morning suggesting Dawn Phenomenon but this doesnt happen every day and i cant see any other patterns to explain it!

I would love to hear any advice or questions that might help. Does anyone else have a variable dawn phenomenon? Has anyone else experienced a sudden detoriation in BG control without any obvious explanation?

Thank you!

I have Dawn Phenomen and I'm on a pump too. Mine doesn't seem to vary, but if I've had a messed up evening before then my normally in range blood sugar the following morning can be higher or lower than normal. By 'messed up' I mean things like eating late, miscalculating carbs, having to have a correction dose, eating close to bedtime, etc.

The only other times my overnight blood sugar has been affected is by hormonal causes.

You may have already done this, but have you tried keeping a diary of when it happens, what you've eaten, exercise taken, etc?

Thanks Azure. I have kept a diary, and not seen any patterns. But to be honest I hate diaries so maybe I need to try that again and be a bit more thorough! Thanks for the advice.

The only other thing that occurred to me was your pump sets. When I have a dodgy set I usually wake to high readings. Just before I swap to a different area of my body, I get quite a few Hugh's, which alert me to the need to move.

Could it be an absorption problem?

hi Azure, yes i wondered about that too! I just switched back to medtronic after a couple of years on omnipod because i could definitely see that some pods gave better results than others. on medtronic things seem a bit better but still got that annoying occasional steady rise some mornings.... Im going to try a diary again,
