Hiya ladies and gents,

A quick question.

I know normal coffee is not good for us but how about decaf? Would that exacerbate my type 2 or is it safe?

How much can I drink?

Re: Decaf coffee anf type 2

I wouldn't say that normal coffee is bad for us, unless there is a medical reason, but coffee like most foods and drinks are fine in moderation.

I started to drink decaff about 4-5 weeks ago, can't taste any difference whatsoever, and at the moment in Asda it is around £1.50 cheaper than normal coffee (200g jar).

Hi Nigel,

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you drink and have you noticed any effects on your bs levels?

Not at all, I drink about 2 mugs a day and around 4 mugs of decaff tea. Never ever noticed either drink having any effect on bg's; unless you like your coffee milky I can't see it having much of a impact on blood glucose.

However, as we keep reiterating on this forum, we are all different and respond differently to certain foods and drinks.

I drink around 4 mugs of ordinary coffee, with single cream a day, sometimes more and it has never had any effect on my Bg levels. As for Decaff........YUK ! Tried it and found it too bland, even when buying premium brands. I love plain filtered coffe which again has no effect on Bg levels.

Worse thing I had recently was a cigar which 'whacked' my Bg levels up to 22.1 for about an hour or so........Yikes ! I know....I shouldn't smoke 'em ! That particular one is off limits now.

Yep, we are all different, as Nigel says.

Thanks again folks.

I haven't had a cigarette since diagnosis, didn't know 'bacco could raise sugar levels like that!

Neither did I until it actually happened........not a pleasant experience. Cigars are much higher in Nicotine than Cigarettes. The one I smoked had about 22 times more Nicotine in it than an ordinary Cigarette.........bl**dy hell !!!

Back to my Mehari's now. Much less of a problem.

Hi
You are right, decaffinated coffee seems to lower risk for developing diabetes type 2, check this link, it is very helpful all-about-beating-diabetes.com/coffee-and-diabetes.html

Yes, you shouldn't smoke, diabetes is another reason to quit smoking. Smoking will raise your blood glucose levels and limit your body ability yo use insulin. One cigarette will reduce your body ability to use insluin by 15%.

Hi Ana23 and welcome :)

Knowing what you should do and doing what you should are two very different things and often "ne'er the twain shall meet"!

You can't take everything away from people, even in the name of health, and purely from my own observations, as I have never smoked myself, it would appear to be something that is considered a "rare treat" enjoyed by many after a good meal and accompanied by a glass of something special.

I am a bit the same with coffee which does tend to up my BG levels a tad, whether it is de-caff or not, but on occasions I do indulge myself and enjoy a really good coffee.

We are all sad cases somewhere along the line!
