Good question, I think the symptoms are very similar. I looked at a few dictionaries and meanings seemed identical although drowsy was a term more associated with illness whilst tired was not.

When I have hypos I get so that I cannot think clearly or function properly. My brain goes fuzzy. It feel different to just being tired. But thT is just me. Others might have a different explanation

In the booklet I was given tiredness is listed as a symptom of hyperglycaemia, whilst drowsiness is given as a symptom of hypoglycaemia.

What is the difference between being tired and being drowsy?

Tiredness in this context would be feeling worn out and lacking energy. Drowsiness is actual sleepiness; the inability to stay awake.

For me, the tiredness of a hypo is very sudden and strong and makes me want to lie down. The tiredness of a hyper makes me dopey and sluggish but in the same way as a hard day's work does.

Hypoglycaemia for me is like walking into a room & forgetting why.. When the hour glass on "Windows operating system" is thinking about it...
Slightly colour blind & sensitive to light. A little like "feeling stoned"... A sort of insecurity of you basic actions/thoughts... You can get "stuck in a loop you can't get out of". I go on "auto pilot" & have to eat. Even waking while asleep...

Hyper...? My legs feel I've run a marathon.. Tired blurry eyes... Almost like coming down with a cold or flu, but without the sniffles or sore throat stuff...
A little dehydrated... Not into the idea of food..

Actually, when you get both symptoms, they DO feel different. When hyper I feel tired, but in hypo I feel drowsy. It is a different feeling, but it's hard to put in words :)

It was certainly hard for them to explain back in 1976 to an 8 year old...

"If you feel funny? Eat something immediately ." Sorry? Define "feel funny".. "Like being drunk"? I'm an 8 year old, I have never been drunk..

You were lucky, your family obviously had more sense than mine. I was drunk at 13 months old when my Mum left me for an afternoon with her family.....she only left me there the once!

Don't get me wrong.. I was brought up around pubs my grandad owned one..!

It was until about ten years later I could go back to the diabetes specialist for my regular & say you know when you used to refer to hypo as "feel funny".?
...Well if you ever tried smoking strong pot back as a medical student? ;)
