Hello everyone, I've been feeling a bit down today :(

I've been type 1 for 18 years in May, had it since I was 7 and I'm 24 now so really I should be ok with this but I am finding it ever so upsetting when someone prompts me about my diabetes or when someone says " you shouldn't be eating that" or " you need to be careful" etc.

There are times when I think I am in control and diabetes has to adjust to me not the other way round, but then other times I feel like what's the point, I'm always going to need to administer insulin whether it's injections (like I take now) or using the pump!

How have you guys come to terms with having type 1 and what do you do when you're feeling down?

Thanks all :) x

Hi
sorry you are feeling so bad, im 10 yrs in this yr and have many other illnesses that get me down much more than my diabetes, sorry i cant help but hope someone soon can

I felt down about diabetes when first diagnosed, and for some time after, because it seemed unrealistic to expect that it could be well controlled.

Now, thirty years later, I couldn't be more relaxed. My blood sugar is exceptionally well controlled. And although I still have to be careful (of course), I'm very much less fearful of hypos than I used to be.

I eat very well, and I don't need to 'count carbs'. (That last supposed requirement is the kind of thing that might have made me give up; so I count myself as very fortunate not to be newly diagnosed.) And I certainly don't need a pump.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were a reversal available for type 1 diabetes within a decade. And you're still young.

In the meantime, however, I might say that to some extent OTHER PEOPLE have to adapt to me. Because I'm diabetic, I mostly eat in my own special way; and any distraction from that is, at best, unhelpful.

I'm usually the one that cooks, anyway. So they have to adapt to me! (But within reason, I can adapt too.)

You just make sure you control your condition, Seriously_Sax1989, and tell any critics to get stuffed.

Hi
It took me ages to "come to terms" with Diabetes.
I battled for ages into thinking I don't have it, the doctors have it wrong, it must be something else....

I believe we all have bad/low days, comes with having any medical condition I suppose.
Just be aware that im sure your family/friends/partner will always be there for a chat or to unload onto should you ever need to.
And if for what ever reason there not, we are all here!

I sometimes feel a bit cheery about my diabetes and the control I have over it and then a brick wall will just come out of nowhere and remind me I cant account for every situation and I have to deal with things as they come up...

Never sit and wallow, doesn't do anyone any good especially yourself.
Sharing's caring :)

Hi :)
Im the same 24 year old and had it since i was 10.used to try to not tell people i had it and act like i didnt have it. Many people ive met/know dont know i have it. As i didnt want people judging me.
Ive now decided that thats ridiculous people shouldn't judge you
The last few weeks ive been realising how important it is too take control of it we only get one chance
Take care:)
