Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi I am type two for last six years and I am following a low carb high fat diet and or at times intermittent fasting for at least a year with only a nominal weight loss. I also have hypothyroidism and CKD stage three. I had just looked up vits and mineral for CKD as I am feeling really tired and stressed to the point of not be able to work properly and it came up with CKD diet for kidney health. This recommended a diet of very little protein and very low fat is needed. I feel utterly confused now ,is a glass of water and a lettuce leaf going to be my staple diet. I just don't know what to try for the best, any advice much appreciated.

I understand the need to moderate protein with kidney problems, but was it explained to you why you need to have low fat? I can't see any connection.

Well you cannot survive on lettuce and water! You do need fat and moderate protein (the amount of the latter depends on gender, age, activity level and health status).
It sounds as if there is lots going on here but you are not giving many details about how you are being treated for your thyroid and renal conditions? Are your blood sugars better and how are your kidneys working ? LCHF is great for diabetes usually and the better your blood sugars are (the less insulin you are making or taking) the better your renal health should be. Jason Fung might be a good person to start with on YouTube or the internet as he is a renal specialist who has taken an interest in diabetes because of the massive overlap between CKD and type 2. However the internet can't diagnose or prescribe so I hope you have access to an endocrinologist who understands CKD?

Hi. My wife has CKD stage 4 and has an excellent Nephrology Professor. He has told her that advice to control protein is not really backed-up by evidence and for her to eat proteins normally. Also as far as I'm aware fat has no effect on CKD and the liver is the main generator of cholesterol anyway. Don't ignore any advice from your consultant but be aware that some advice on the internet may not be valid. I understand that when in Stage 5 CKD things like potassium may then need some control but again discuss with the consultant.
