Hi All,
My name is Marco Christoforou. My daughter (now 11) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Sept 2007. I'm did a physics degree and I'm a software engineer who can do some electronics as well, so my immediate reaction to the diagnoses was to look at what I could do. When I saw what was available I was very unimpressed. It's difficult to believe we live in the 21st Century when you look at the pumps that are widely available. Only the Omnipod looks any good (in fact we are hoping to have one within he next few weeks).

Anyway, so I decided to develop my own pump. Take a look at ipump.org.uk for full details. I am now working with someone at Malaga University whose daughter also has diabetes. My aim is to develop a pump that everyone can have, and isn't just about fleecing diabetics out of their money. I'd love it to be free or at cost. I'm trying find ways of minimising the impact of diabetes on diabetics, so they have to do as little as possible. I'm pretty clued up on pump technology, and all the new pumps that are coming out. There's some good stuff on the way, take a look at jewelpump.com; this is my favorite. I'm also pretty good on non-invasive glucose monitoring.

If you want to talk or get involved please get in touch.

Marco

Marco, best of luck with that...I admire your commitment, and really hope that you are successful in your attempt. I actually like my combo pump...although the I do not like the cost, so anything that could be made cheaper, but availiable to all would be a great step forward.

If you ever need a focus panale member, please let me know!

Hi Marco

It would certainly be interesting to see how you can fair on this project...certainly about the costs that are actually involved would be very interesting.... me personally, I hope that you can get a pump/insulin that does not get air bubbles in the tubing/cartridges. That is my biggest criticism, my 2nd one would be having to detach it to get in to water (I'm on accuchek combo pump).....can you imagine a non diabetic removing their pancreas every time they want a bath or to go swimming?

I wish you so much luck on your venture, and hope it proves successful. Good for you, I wish I had the brains to do something like you....

Thanks for your comments. That's interesting. By coincidence only today I was looking at exactly the problem of bubbles in the system. I appreciate your comment because it's that kind of information I need to know to make a better pump.

Thanks again,
Marco
