Diabetes & Addison's Disease

Hey everyone, I have just been diagnosed with Addison’s Disease, my consultant said that people with Type 1 Diabetes are prone to getting this along with Hypothyroidism. I am just wondering if anyone on here has Addison’s Disease and how do you cope on a day-to-day basis?

Addison's involves the adrenal glands whereas T1DM obviously involves the Islet cell in the pancreas. From what I remember Addison's is way less common. Hypothyroid involves yet another endocrine system, the thyroid and pituitary (which makes TSH, thyroid stim hormone). The pituitary does secrete hormones that stimulate the adrenals too (like ACTH). IMO you should consult with your endo about this before starting any drugs. They're the experts!

I have seen my consultant a few times and he is a Endocrinologist and Diabetes specialist, which is brilliant. He started me on some medication already and I have been on them for a couple of months but to be honest I am not feeling much better, but I'm on a low dosage at the moment, so I’m sure they’ll adjust it. My consultant put me on the medication before he knew for sure that I had Addison's because of the blood test results. The Cortisol was half of what it should have been.

Yeah and as I recall the ACTH ( AdrenoCorticoTropin, the stimulating Hormone, pituitary) is high, it's trying to get the adrenals to put out Cortisol but it doesn't work. They'll probably adjust it. When you're deficient in a hormone (like thyroid) you're pretty sensitive to it so they start low.

Hey, I have Addison's as well. Feel free to contact me with any question, but it's not anything more than popping 2x hydrocortisone tabs in the morning, 1x at 4pm, and remembering to double the dosage in times of high stress or illness. If you're T1 then it should be a breeze as you're already adept at taking medication at prescribed times.
