I have taken cortisone for Addison's disease for the past 25 years. I'm 74 years old. When the blood sugar count went up I was told that this was because of the cortisone so I tried taking a little less but have been put back onto the original dose. In the meantime I have followed a low carbohydrate diet, walk an hour each day, follow an exercise course for oldies, lost 8 kilos so I'm well back into the correct weight for my height ,67 kilos - 172cm but I'm still just over the reccomended blood sugar reading. Yesterday my family doctor told me that at .my age high blood sugar (150 instead of 100) was OK. Nothing would happen. Only if and have I were 30 or 40 would dieting be useful. That I should eat normally with pasta, sweet things etc as it would make no difference me being so old. Am I over careful of my health or is my doctor out of touch with present thinking?. I'm not dead yet and what remains of my life I should like to live as actively in good health as possible. Am I exagerating or should I continue my low carb diet? It costs me hardly any sacrifice. I feel much better for it; clearer thinking, my eyes seem better and my humour too. The only negative thing is that everyone says I'm over reacting and are constantly plying me with high-carb food. a bit of encouragement or even criticism would be gratefully accepted. Thank you!

The opinion of the NHS is that diabetes is progressive and there is nothing that you can do about it. This is a defeatist attitude and, in my opinion, wrong. Higher blood sugars cause damage to your organs and keeping them under control will slow the progress of the condition. I think your doctor is of the old school and also wrong.

Since low carbing is not a big sacrifice for you and it will keep your healthier then I should take your doctor's advice with a pinch of salt but not more than six grammes a day. (That's a joke)

Travel your own path ...... if you feel better with your diet, the opinion of ANYONE else is irrelevant. That includes you know who. Good work :)

You carry on doing what you are doing, good grief you could live another 25 yrs. And you can live it healthy. Ignore the doctor.

Carry on as you are - especially as you feel so much better for it.

HI @fatcat3 I would rather take your advice any day.
I am not to religious, however "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." comes to mind.
Best of health to you.:):)

I'm afraid your doctor is talking nonsense. Hi blood suagr at any age is not good as it can affect the eyes, kidneys and other organs within a few years and hopefully you will still be aound. Carry on with the low-carb diet and enjoy the rest of your life with other nice foods. The steroids will may make it impossible to get your blood sugar right down but you should get near it.

I agree with everyone above. Go your own way. It is obviously doing you good, you feel well, and want to continue to feel well for many years to come. Good luck to you. Your doctor is very old school, and quite honestly, I think his suggestions about diet are foolish. Your friends are also being unfair and foolish. Some of mine are the same. They say things like "at our time of life we should eat what we want".... and they do. I just ignore them and tell myself I will be the one laughing whilst they will find themselves with ill health.
