Self absorbed and rude people! Motorists who are oblivious to the rest of the world, and really don't give a ****!
First of all - I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year! Here we go again, another year trying to keep the dreaded D word under control :D Thank goodness we have this website!

I am curious to know just how much catching colds, or any other virus come to that, affects Diabetics. I had all the flu shots, but have come down with something very much akin to flu! Been feeling unwell for a week now, mostly dreadful congestion, fuzzy head (more than usual) LOL! achy limbs, especially my legs and I am wondering how much of what I am feeling is because of being diabetic. I had surgery, general anaesthetic, for minor op in November, and was blown away by how much it took out of me! Not sure that I had time to recover from that fully before I caught this virus. I have been off work this week, just too unwell to work, and having had time off for op in November I am becoming troubled about how much sick time I am having this year, only had 1.5 days off last year!

Cannot seem to shake this off, each day I expect to feel better but I don't! My legs ache so much, also have have muscle twitching in them - suspect this is a diabetic thing....anyone have any ideas.. does it take longer to get over illness when you are diabetic?

Sorry for sounding miserable, I am not, I am really quite optimistic by nature, but this is kind of getting me down now... my life is too busy to feel ill ... have so much to do!

Yes, any viruses, Colds Flu etc will all have an effect on you and your Bg levels, usually elevating them. Have you checked your Bg levels recently ? There was a recent discussion here about this subject....no idea where it was !

With the sypmtoms and the fact things are still lingering I would advise you to see your GP asap and discuss. You may need some medication to help you get over things.

My BG levels have been in the low 5s/high 4s for some time. Caught the common cold 4 days ago and all my readings(I test 5 times a day) have been between 5.8 and 6.9. My medication and diet remain the same so my conclusion is that the cold has upped my readings. I'll be interested to see what happens when the cold clears up.

Hi after my Son had the flu jabs he caught a virus sounding exactly like yours, at 1st we thought it was a reaction to the jabs but doctors say he,s been unlucky and caught a virus at same time, it lasted 10 days, his bs also shot up about 5 more than norm .. sometimes more. Hope your better soon if not see your gp

Hi,

not sure if this is relevant, but our local general hospital has put a block on non critical admissions and visitors due to a latest outbreak of Novo Virus, so if its affecting us Brummies, it may be a national issue?.

Regards Steve.

Hi, thanks for all your help! Steve, I am looking up novo virus to see what it is! I went to see my GP because of advice here, in case my sugars were up, reading at 7.2 so ok. I am diet only and do not self test because my GP advised not to. I am going to start trying to test but the strips are so expensive. I have a respiratory infection and have to stay off work at least until Monday, with the snow fall here not much likelihood of getting there anyway

Novo virus is a gastric virus, so not what I have thank goodness, it sounds really nasty

Hi.
I know you took the advice and saw your GP, however that reading whenever it was taken is only ONE reading at that particular time, so I wouldn't hold much store by the fact he/she said it is OK. Means nothing really, you need a series of tests to know that everything is Ok. Why we always recommend frequent testing.

If you are finding the cost of strips prohibitive despite the cheap ones available on Ebay, then there is a much cheaper alternative method called Glucoflex-R test strips which are accurate and don't require a meter. Helps to keep the costs down. Available on prescription and at all Pharmacies although you may have to ask for them to be obtained. They are reviewed in Diabetes Product Reviews section.

Here is a link.

I started with sore throat and loss of voice 2 weeks ago this eased after 4days to be replaced by a feeling of total exhaustion and dizzyness have been off work 3 days now still not feeling good

Sorry to hear that, I am now back at work this week, though not fully on form I am much better. If you do not feel better I would advise you see your GP. I eventually did, just to make sure my sugar levels weren't spiralling, she was very kind and thorough and gave me a prescription in case I felt worse, luckily I didn't and gradually felt better. I feel fairly certain that my diabetes slowed the recovery process.

I do hope you feel better soon
