Diabetes and HGV Driving

HI there

My name is Terry I have been diabetic for about 6 years on tablets, just recently I had to start on insulin. Before the insulin I was an hgv class 1 driver needless to say I lost my job. What I am trying to find out is the government has been discussing for a no of years weather through medical ground to allow type 2 on isulin to get there licence back. But all you can find is that government is still in discusion, this has been for quite a no of years

I am a type2 on insulin i hold a class 1 hgv and have continued to for the last 7 years i have to renew my hgv licence every 12 months there is a form in the pack that your consultant has to sign for you ye need to contact dvla medical and tell them you want to retain your hgv licence and you can meet the higher standards that they require ( yo must at all times carry some form of glucose or carbs with you when driving and you must check your blood levels twice a day as if we dont anyway ).
And that is all you need to do mate hope it helps but you can continue to drive the people at normal dvla dont know about the rules so you need to ring the medical section and that should sort you out

It all depends on how long Terry has actually held his licence for........it isn't quite as clear cut as you make out.

This from the DVLA website which shows a potted version of the requirement for somebody who is applying for or already has a Category C or Cat D licence.

New applicants on insulin or existing drivers are barred in law from driving LGV (Cat C) or PCV (Cat D) vehicles from 1/4/91.

Drivers licensed before 1/4/91 on insulin are dealt with individually and licensed subject to satisfactory annual Consultant assessment.

Regulation changes in April 2001 allow “exceptional case” drivers to apply for or renew their entitlement to C1/C1E to drive small lorries with or without a trailer subject to meeting all “Qualifying Conditions”.

I think the discussion is still raging about this......many different views about the subject which have been aired on here before causing some quite heated discussion at times.
 
Interesting isn't it that the dangers of the treatment bar you from your job, when the condition itself doesn't?
It's probably worth asking to see a specialist to find if there is any other possible treatment. There might well be for T2

Good point Hana. :)

There is Byetta (Exanatide) which does not bar you from driving such vehicles and also Victoza (Liraglutide) which is a bit of a grey area as the DVLA haven't actually got a stated policy on that one yet although I would imagine that it will probably be treated the same as Byetta for LGV/PCV driving.

I can say that you really need medical support for your condition now. This will help you determine the necessary treatments you will need now or in the future. You can count on me in praying my friend.

my partners type 2 he refused the insulin and was given one injection per day called VICTOZA + 2 GLITRESIDE PILLS 2 in morning & 2 in the evening. the victoza isnt an insulin , as i said my partner was told he was type 2 and was given insulin,he refused regarding his driving licence.

myself im a type 1 im on insulin novorapid 3 times per day and lantus in the evening, dvla swansea were informed i got 3 forms to fill in and told not to drive. 2 months later i got a letter telling me that i was getting my driving licence back,on the arrival of my driving licence i noticed all my classes were gone even 7.5 ton & 3ton van classes. buses / mini buses and taxis were a no future go. another letter arrived it read you can re-apply for 7.5 ton/3 tonners at a later date. today ive been given a car driving licence and a driving licence that needs renewed every 3 years. i havnt got a car now, i now use public transport.

That is correct but you still have to get the go ahead from DVLA
