Diabetes care depressingly poor

I joined the forum 6 months ago as a very depressed person, who had the standard NHS advise, and was still seeing high test results (I was only testing urine at the time), and feeling that life was going to be very difficult from now on.
The forum, and some of the 'high posting' members influenced me to get a meter, reduce my carbs, and start testing. Since then, asking some questions on the way and, probably like Mongoose, reading hundreds of threads, I have managed to get my life back in order. I feel great, have loads of energy, and am keeping well within NICE guidelines as my recent HBA1c proves.

But that's the point isn't it? Having left the N HS regime on advice from people here, you feel great, and are hitting targets. But those posters never forced you into low carb:-

However, I can do this on about 130-150g of carbs a day. I realise this is higher than a lot of people on here, but my view is that my diabetes is maybe a bit different to them. Mine will probably progress to the point where I need to reduce further, but it may not.

I'm one of those "high volume" posters, and here is what I say on my standard greeting note when people ask about diet:-
". The total number of carbs per day you can eat depends on how advanced your diabetes is. It’s perhaps worth starting at about 50% of normal levels for a non-diabetic then adjusting up or down according to how you get on. So that means eating 150 grams of carbs per day for a man, 125 for a woman. You can read the total carb content of food under “nutritional info” on the packet or wrapping, or look it up on the internet for loose food. Just google “carb content..”

That's a straight cut and paste from my standard answer. Not forcing "low carb" you'll agree. The same is true from another "high volume" poster, xyzzy, who talks about reducing carbs by about 50% and testing to see the results.

As I said, a lot of people talk about low carb, because a lot do it, but I don't see them telling new members "it's the only way"; quite the opposite as you can see from my quotes above. That's why people like me and Borofergie get fed up when, after spending probably hundreds of hours trying to help people, we're told we're "force feeding" people.

Grazer, I feel the need to state that a post was removed which replied to mongoose which was tantamount to telling mongoose and others what they should be eating. It's not the first I've seen recently either.

Maybe so, I didn't see it, but of course people will give their views; it's up to the recipients of that advice to decide if they want to follow it. We're all big people. That's a tad different to "bullying" or "force feeding" which was being stated on this thread. I still wait to see the "high volume posters" pushing the low carb route on others as the only way, as opposed to saying what they do and what works for them. If they can't do that, and remember I'm NOT a low carber, then there's no point in having a discussion forum. The most common point Ive seen made on here recently has been "what works for you"; bet there's more examples of that than there are of people being told "you must eat this". And, of course, it is implicit in everything that's said that opinions expressed are the views of the poster. Don't think we have to state that every time!
