Hi guys

Have you ever thought about making diabetes.co.uk branded clothing? T-shirts, jackets, etc? I know a lot of the guys on here are massive fans as am I myself. I'd wear the t shirt, etc. Even pens and stuff with the logo on would be great. Just an idea as all your stuff is from products already branded by different companies. I like the bracelets, but if you just did a silicone one with the logo I'd be more inclined to wear than one that costs a tenner a year. Just little things like these would help us feel more of a part of this already thriving and vital community. I understand some people would maybe not like this, but I for one would.
Would anybody else be interested in such a products should they become available?

Mart

Personally, I wouldn't want to buy such things.
It might be sensible to read the bit on the forum 'rules thread

Who's behind Diabetes.co.uk? and contact them directly.

Fair enough, phoenix. I often raise money through fund-raisers and would be good to show the charity I am raising funds for. Apologies if I have have broken any rules and caused offence. It's obviously a ridiculous notion.
Moderators, PLEASE DELETE this topic. I disn't know it was going to invite such a toxic reponse.
I will think twice before posting such twaddle in future :( Apologies to anyone I have offended, it was honestly not my intention.

Thank you MCMLXXIII. :) Glad you didn't get up on the wrong side of the bed, lol. :D

Hey Mart sorry if you think I'm getting at you. As I said I would't want to buy them but others may. I'ts a nice idea to use the idea to raise money for charity but as the link point out this forum is run by an independent company (ie not diabetesUK the charity) and it's them you'd have to ask for permission.

That's cool, I meant raising awareness for diabetes in general, I have already bought T shirts from diabetes Uk, I just wouldn't mind a range from diabetes.co.uk. I prefer the logo, to be honest. I"d obviously ask permission, etc, but wouldn't mind wearing T shirts etc, when jogging or walking the dog, because I'm not ashamed to have it and it may help to keep it in mind for the public that not all diabetes sufferers are over-weight, chocolate and fast-food junkies and that we can actually lead a pretty active, regular life. There's a massive stigma with a lot of people's preconceptions of what diabetes actually is. I wouldn't wear the clothes all the time, but would feel proud to wear on runs, etc as I have personally come so far. I used to be very depressed and tired until I found out that I was diabetic. I don't ever want to feel like that again.
I know not everyone would want to wear such clothing, but some may. It was an open question and I respect your opinion that it's not for you.
All the best.

Mart.

There is such a stigma to having Type 2, there is no way that I would wear any diabetes branded stuff, either this website or the charity. I would not want to label myself as being fat and stupid and that I brought it on myself.

Hello Martwolves.

This isnt a rediculous notion at all ...
Any creative idea we 'will' listen and would consider 'if' worth persuing .

We are approachable and you may ask admin [giverny] or benedict [forum editor] via PM
if you wish to .

The forum rules are 'there' obviously - yet any creative idea's etc - can be suggested too

Some members would maybe buy - others wouldnt , as is expressed here .
We are a vast and varied audience to other members creative ideas.

However we [admin/mod team] will listen and consider any suggestions .
If 'not' do' able then thats how it is - yet if do' able another bonus and something more
to help all ...

Hope this helps .

Anna.

Well I actually wear both DUK and JDRF running vests (I l really like the latter one because it has a cute penguin on it ). I feel I've 'earned' them for running for them in events.( and that's probably why I wouldn't be interested in buying another one) The DUK one doesn't specify which type of diabetes and I certainly don't feel any stigma in wearing it.

I think it's a good idea. I'd also be interested in raising awareness via an event or something ! As some have said, it won't suit all, but I'm not ashamed of my diabetes and I too think it's good to portray us as normal people doing normal things ! Not donut eating lardies !

Thanks all - both pro-and anti views. I feel when all's said and done, I have diabetes for life as type 1. I may as well grin and bear it and face the fact that I'm doing something about it. A little renimder on my shirt would certainly motivate me when I feel like I don't want to go on. It's personal choice. Anna, thanks for reading and your comments! I don't want to post out of bounds and I'm fairly new on here, so I've learned something today, thanks also to Phoenix, I see you've been on here some time, so I'll swot up on my protcol in future. I just thought I'd see what the consensus was first and it's a mixed bag. I'll see if there are any more comments and then put to the moderators if I think it's worthwhile. If it's a 'stinker' I'll put it down to experience. Thanks all.

Mart.

Hi Denise, your reponse is very interesting. Diabetes UK and this website are invaluable to people with the varied forms of diabetes. Why would you be reluctant to raise awareness or promote a charity that does so much good for others? I've seen the holidays that they arrange for families who's children are stricken with diabetes and parents and child do not know what the hell is going on and can learn from professionals and experienced sufferers in a relaxed environment. I think they do sterling work. That is your personal choice. I dread to think how my own life would be without diabetes care and support and I only got it 3 years ago. I'm still learning and only found out by asking last wednesday how to "carb-count". There's so much to glean from others who have lived through it all before. That's why this website is a godsend to learn and to help others.

I haven't seen anything 'toxic' that a person has written :? . as with all threads, people will like or not like, agree or not agree.

RRB :)

It was an initial misunderstanding, that was resolved hours ago :) I understand and commend the fact that people speak fromt the heart and honestly, if you'd read the rest of the thread. I know some are vehemently against it, as is their right, others do ther things and son't require such an item and some quite like to promote the idea that we are normal human beings with a sub-normal pancreas and can still live the lives many others do if we want to, which was my view and also promoting the fact that there are positive action groups out there that help us through the tough times. I know a lot of you are buddies and that's cool. I'm new and have made a few genuine friends so far and this is the way it should be. One group, one focus - helping one-another through our trials and tribulations :D It was a thought I had and I thought "what if someone else likes it", that's all :) take care.

Hi Mart

It is the Type 1/Type 2 divide. Its the Type 1's they couldn't help it, a Type 2, they are overweight and ate too much/the wrong things and brought it on themselves - that is the perception in the media. If there is any article in a paper such as the Daily Mail or on programmes such as Embarrassing Bodies about diabetes (they mean Type 2) it is always down to lifestyle.

I'm not saying that this is correct that they do this and maybe there should be something done about this perception. There are fat people without Type 2 and slim people with it.

My diabetes is on a need to know basis (close family, friends and colleagues) on a hypo (I'm on gliclazide) or lactic acidosis (taking metformin and drinking alcohol) basis. I do not want discrimination/being thought of as being stupid from the wider team I work with or from acquaintances. I have no need for this and do not want to be seen any different to anyone else. It is far easier to refuse the cakes that come around the office by being wheat intolerant (which I am) than to say there are too many carbs in that because I am diabetic.

I have taken part in research because I want to help other diabetics, but there is no way I would take part in a public fundraising event or wear diabetes branded clothing.

I've always been overweight, right from childhood, but had my borderline gestational diabetes (twice out of three) been followed up over the years and I had been told that I was more at risk of Type 2, I may not be here today.

Denise, a very valid and personal point and I get it. Some people ARE ignorant due to the press, etc. I can see where you're coming from. Everyone I know, know's I have diabetes as I was off work for 6 months durong tests. They all understand and know what to do in the event of a hypo as I took a slot in the team brief and handed out literature. No on takes the p*** or anything and even those who are acquaintances, make sure I'm ok and don't leave me on my own if I'm staying a bit later and wait for me to pack up. They don't have to but do as they are friends. Good luck with your ongoing treatment.

Sincerley

Mart

PS: when did anyone take the Daily Mail seriously anyway? Lol

I'm not fat.
I'm also not stupid.
You're decision not to wear such merchandise is perfectly acceptable, but its up to the individual.
If I wear a "I'm a real man" t-shirt (which is a campaign to stop violence towards women and children) I think it's raising awareness of a worthy cause.
No offence intended:smile:
