Diabetes distribution

"Researching" online I found this map of diabetic distribution in New York

I find it amazing that you can go from one "borough " to another and the difference in diabetes is so different , what's going on is NY so stratified that genetic reasons or eating habits ( because of the people who live in an area ) cause you to step across a line where on one side there are few diabetics on the other there are 300% more . ?
 
And when you look at USA and worldwide distribution of diabetes it makes the NY data even more remarkable ,anyone know the answer ?

You can bet your life that all the differences are probably down to poorer areas of the World and different areas. Poorer diet and worse conditions, hence the prevalence in some areas which is worse than the better off areas.

Just a thought.
 
How does that explain the NY distribution , they are all relatively rich ( in world terms ) yet the difference between adjoining districts can be 300% , it's as if Islington had 0.3 % diabetes and Notting Hill 15% , no one in NY is as poor as India

poorer areas worldwide have lower diabetic rates , increasing wealth drives diabetic rates up . so why the difference in NY districts /
 
It could possibly be down to race. Different races have varying susceptibility to diabetes.

It'd be interesting to see how closely that map correlates with the distribution of whites, blacks, Hispanics, Chinese, etc. throughout New York.

It can't be as simple as that , if it's Poverty and race,education and lack of access to health care in Brooklyn , why is it so low in Africa where surely these things are even worse , is this just diet in conjunction with the above . where are the epidemiologists ?
 
In NY it's in part to do with the foods associated with poverty in western society. Cheap and highly processed.(and no it's not as simple as that!)
In Africa traditional diets are't associated in anyway with diabetes, however a change to more processed foods is.
