Diabetes My way

My post is an effort to add some balance to this thread.

Some months ago, I attended a local DUK meeting, where a local DHS, Specialist Dietician was our presenter of the night, discussing suitable diet for diabetics, mainly T2. During her talk, she outlined the Eatwell Plate, and when it came to snacks, she also mentioned malt loaf. When I had recovered from the pain of my chin hitting the floor, I asked about all that dried fruit.

Her response was that when she was meeting with diabetic patients, it was generally because their diet was significantly adrift, citing that when she asked those in front of her if they snacked, and what they snacked up, it was often and pack of biscuits or family packs of crisps. Now, I guess, by comparison, the malt loaf would be quite benign.

The Soreen website states their malt to be 16.3gr carb, per slice.

Ideal then (not)

I get that some people feel hungry and therefore need to snack.....so why not tell them that the fewer carbs they eat the less hungry they will feel?

Because that takes thinking and re-educating, and it appears that there is no money (in the short term).

I'm not sure why, but I've been on a low carb diet since the beginning of December, and I have not felt the urge to snack during that period.

This is from a 65 year old man who has been officially diagnosed with binge eating disorder.

I feel better, I sleep better and I've lost almost a stone into the bargain. My BG is now mostly in the normal range too.

I'm not doing an extremely low carb regime but have no qualms about recommending some level of lchf diet.

It's definitely working for me.

Strange, weight loss resources reckon it's 22 gms of carb per 33 gm slice. McVities Digestives work out at 9 gms carb per 15 gm biscuit. The thing is when you're eating, say 40gms of carb a day to keep your BG under control, adding the odd 20 gms of carb here and there may or may not do you much good. At the end of the day you'd have to see what your meter said to see if it was a good idea.

If, as a type II, you can eat the suggested snacks, good news. It's just that this thing about "one rule suits all" is rubbish.

If the "healthy snack" thing isn't bad enough, how about the "NICE recommends triple drug therapy". Still, it is called "My Diabetes My Way". Definitely not going to be my way if I can help it. I think some of their advice is just plain irresponsible.

I did a quick Google and found the 22gr too, and was surprised it was so low, so went to the Soreen site. That figure quoted by Soreen is for 1/7th of the loaf. Looking at the weightloss site again, everything is higher, so am assuming (I know what assuming does,..... ahem) the weightloss site uses a larger slice.

Me too. Diagnosed type 2 in august, lost 25 pounds on lchf and had a bing eating problem all my life. Now the binges seem to have stopped and I don't feel hungry all the time!

Well, if I wanted to ruin my a1c and life in general really quick, then I'd follow that!
