hey everyone… my lovely diabetes nurse has retired. Had my first review with the new diabetes nurse at the gp practice…I think it would be fair to say it was instant dislike, not like me at all, I’m a people person and even with prickly people, there’s a ‘way in’ to make some sort of connection; this woman’s attitude was way way off what you should expect of a hc professional, I don’t think she like me either ( just one of those things in life I suppose ) …now, I do not want to see her again but she’s now the only nurse in the practice. How can I manage the situation ? The doctors always say ‘ oh the db nurse are the specialist you would need to see them’ but is this absolutely gospel ? Do I have the right to ask to be seen by a gp for db reviews ?

Please don’t think I’m a mean person, I’m far from it ..I suppose you’ll need to trust me that this person is not nice…

Could you update your details with what type diabetes you are, and any medications?
It would help answer your questions

Hi @Musicalsoul , I think maybe a letter or email to the practice manager might be an avenue to explore with your predicament. They shouldn’t favour any particular member of staff, they should remain unbiased and could answer your question about seeing a GP rather than the nurse you don’t get on with.

Usually when you butt heads, you do have to sort it out together... Have a talk, etc. It's not something I'm good at, which is why I haven't seen my rheumatologist for 16 years. I sincerely detest the woman and believe she's a right hack, so I'm waiting for her to retire, which could be another 20 years or so. I just looked up her page on the hospital's website to see whether she's still there, and her blurb says that really listening to the patient is key... Which just about made me choke on my mint tea. ;) Sometimes there's no getting around it, and you do need to see someone, so... Ask whether you could get your checks with the GP, and if that is not possible, whether someone can mediate a talk between you and the nurse, to get things settled, so you're not alone together and someone bears witness. ;)

Sometimes people get off on the wrong foot due to some misunderstanding. Ask the practice what can be done in a case like this, and go from there.
Good luck!

Hi
I'm part of a large practice in the north of england which is rated 6th best in england.
They do not have a diabetic specialist nurse.
Its a nurse i see to take the blood then another for my review where they poke your feet etc.
The gp looks at the blood tests and then decides whether i need to see him.

I taught the nurses years ago there are a breed of people who take responsibility for their own care.

My hba1c is 39 my weight stable im not under a specialist and me and the surgery rub along beautifully.
If i need anything i just ask and i get it.

Am i lucky or have i made my own luck??

I wish you well

Tony
