I do not have diabetes
For a couple of months, I have been contemplating whether I have diabetes or not.

I have been to the doctors explaining symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches and eating and drinking a lot but I was tested (3 months ago) and everything but vitamin D and iron was ok.

So I started to test myself using an Accu-Check Aviva glucose meter.

My results have been:

7:22( on waking up). 4.9mmol

10:38( 3 hours after breakfast) 4.9 mmol

15:04( 3 hours after lunch) 6.1 mmol

N:B My diet usually consists of chicken, beef ( allergic to fish), pork, lamb, pasta, potatoes, cornflakes, branflakes, bread, cheese, milk, fruit and a few treats every now and then. I am a healthy weight and my grandmother had diabetes type 2.

I am active,
I am only 12 years old and I am black Carribean.

These results are also from 4 months ago due to the fact that I have only just started being conscious of my health, especially as of my constant headaches.

Those are actually pretty good numbers all round especially given the foods you are consuming. Have you been prescribed any medication to try and remedy your Vit D and Iron deficiencies.

Well..thank you so much..wasn't expecting answers so soon!

@4ratbags, I have been prescribed 3 doses of vitamin d medicine, to take every 2 weeks for 6 weeks, they came in a vial of three.

However, not much has changed and even my doctor was confused as to why I'm not responding. She was supposed to be writing to a specialist but she hasn't. Last time we went to the doctors, it wasn't the same doctor and he just went over my info and did nothing, My iron has got better with the medicine tho but is still a little low.Mum does care but tells me to just take paracetamol and rest which is hard considering how shockingly bad I feel. My migraines are getting worse.

@Mike D, thanks so much for the reassurance. I was getting really frightened especially because I feel worse now than I did back than.

A few weeks ago, I felt really bad and ended up not being able to breath, having a headache like someone was trying to crack my skull or something. Went to the emergency doctors as a and e were taking too long. Nothing was really done about it and no one knows what caused it.

Any clue as to what happened?

Thank you both for the replies,

If you're still not feeling right, then I'd go back to the doctors and explain your symptoms again. That way they can reassure you and do any extra tests if necessary.

Best wishes to you :)

Thanks so much azure, I think it is time to have a re-check, haven't been to the doctors for 3 months now and I'm having more headaches, needing the loo more and eating loads. I find when I feel dizzy, the only solution is to have a banana or gluco tabs, things like crisps or sweets help but the effect wears off after a while.

Again thanks for the help! :)

If it is at all possible try to book in with the original Dr you saw and make sure your mum gets on her case about that referal to the specialist. Its great to see you taking such a pro active approach to your health and I hope they can get to the bottom of the issue as I know what it feels like as I also had problems with constant headaches from the moment I woke up right til I went to sleep but my issue turned out to be my eyes but as your symptoms can be alleviated temperaraly with food that may not be an issue for you. Keep us posted.

Hi. Those figures are completely non-diabetic. Headaches and eating a lot are not really diabetes symptoms other than by exception anyway. You are having a high carb diet and the fact that your bs figures are so good means you have a lot of leeway in the future. I hope your symptoms can be explained by keeping in contact with the GP.

You say you're getting migraines: have you been properly diagnosed as having them and prescribed proper medication for them? Have you tried to find out whether any particular foods (or situations) can bring them on?

Sorry, are you really 12 years old or is that a mistake?
I honestly don't want to sound condescending, but am I the only one that is concerned that somebody of this age has got a meter from somewhere and is checking their blood sugars and charting it?

The forum is a great resource but I think there is a line we should be careful of crossing, especially as the OP has mentioned they have had tests done by the GP and they haven't shown T1 diabetes. Maybe mum needs to take you back to the doc if you are still suffering symptoms and ask for a second opinion? In this instance, it would be better than getting information from an internet forum.

Hope you get it sorted out and feel better soon.

I am not sure if the original doctor is still working there as my mum has tried to book an appointment for herself but has also been referred to a different doctor as she is not there. Thank you so much for the positive feedback.

One thought suspect for my headaches were my eyes and I had to constantly change my prescription for my glasses. The optometrist asked if I had been diagnosed with diabetes or anything similar due to headaches and having to change my prescription so rapidly.

Atleast 2 years ago, I was at a different doctor( due to relocation) and I had severe headaches. My doctor did a urine test on me and said that the ketones in my system were at high levels. I then had a random blood test and my bs was quite high, but the doctor said it was not enough for me to be diagnosed as diabetic.

My mum tried all sorts of food to see my reaction to them and these headaches seemed to get worse or changed places with foods such as breakfast bars or sweets.

Going back to the doctor from 2 years ago, my mum explained this and asked if I could be diabetic along with other symptoms but he denied it and said there was a problem with either my liver or bone. Then it was discovered my Vitamin D was very low but I was never given treatment.

A year ago, the headaches started to come back and we were booked into a appointment at the hospital. He said my headaches sounded like sinusitis and gave me a nose spray. it worked for a little while but my headaches now are like the same from the ones 2 years ago.

Thanks for your help and may you be blessed!;)

Hi there @Robbity , yes my headaches have not been properly diagnosed as migraines but carry the same symptoms of migraines and I have not been prescribed proper medicine for them.

Situations that can bring them on are like not having food for atleast 1 hour and a bit and if I don't have enough food. I also experience other symptoms like nausea and going pale or a greyish complexion (as described family and friends). Mum has tried to alert the doctor but they just say I need more food as I am growing up. However I consider myself to have a healthy amount of food a day and the right type of foods.

I wouldn't say now it it certain foods, maybe if I have sweets or something but 2 years ago, when my blood sugar and ketones were quite high, it used to be foods like energy bars that made me have the headache.

Thank you so much for your help, :)

Hi there @ladybird64, Yes I am only 12 years old. :) With regards as to checking my blood sugars, My mum and I got one free form Accu-Check after explaining my situation. It was merely almost a check up due to the fact that my paternal grandmother had diabetes T2, my maternal grandmother has recently had very high blood sugars and ketones in her system, and my mum may have coeliac disease ( which I have heard can be a disease likely of those with diabetes or have similar symptoms, please correct me if I am wrong).

It started to become a bit of a concern when family and friends told me along with my headaches, I started to go pale and the only thing that I felt would stop me would be eating something like a banana. Also from my previous history of my blood sugar and ketones.

I almost forgot to mention that when doing my last blood test at the doctors, my mother asked my results and they said that everything was fine except for my Vitamin D and iron, without giving the results. I had managed to scan on the screen that everything was in green except for my blood sugar, iron and Vitamin D, which were either amber or red.

Therefore my mum recontacted with a friend who's grandchildren(a boy and a girl) have diabetes type 1 from Canada. The grandson is older than me but went through the the same thing at my age with the headaches etc and it took them years for him to be diagnosed with lots and lots of trips to the doctors.

I agree with the fact of that it would be better for me to actually go back to the doctors and ask for a second opinion and I am in the process of doing that however the doctors in my area are extremley booked up especially because of the holiday season.:p

Thanks for your help, ;)
