So I love to come on Diabetes UK daily and see how every1s doing,also like to check in to see news about the research thats been reported on here.There seems to be progress ,maybe!! into maybe!!! new treatments or even a cure for diabetes in the future on am I been naive?!?!?I was only diagnosed last year so maybe I am been naive,I imagine people that have had diabetes a long time have probably heard things like this all the time but we all live in hope right??

A life without hope is a very dull one indeed. I think progress is being made, look at technology, having access to an affordable sensor which could monitor BG levels at the touch of a button 3 years ago was unheard of, yet we have the libre sensor, even the trials with the artificial pancreas seems to of come on leaps and bounds.

I believe the future is more positive now than it's ever been, more awareness in the public has helped too, in regards to funding so yes i'm totally optimistic

There's certainly a lot of optimism in curing type 1 diabetes and there are already a lot of options that would make it significantly easier to manage (artificial pancreas, 1-year shots to keep your beta cells producing insulin, etc).

The problem is how long it takes for these treatments to go through trials, get government approval, and actually make it onto the market for us to use. Plus, there are often delays due to insufficient funding for each of these trials. If you're talking about a treatment, that process can easily take 5 years. If you're talking about an actual CURE that process could take more than 10.

On a personal level, I think about how insanely expensive this process takes, and (to a certain extent) I understand why pharmaceutical companies charge so much for their medications. Those profits help fund research to develop new treatment options and help to fund the process of actually bringing them to market.

The last few years especially I feel like things are really happening...I don't believe it's imminent yet...but the breakthroughs over the last couple of years have been huge...I certainly have a lot more hope than I used to.

I read something a couple of weeks ago regarding the first ever trials of insulin. It got me thinking...that we really already have a cure...we have insulin . While it's not perfect and it would be lovely to not to have all the agro that goes along with it...it's afforded us many more opportunities than we would've had before it was invented when people rarely lived beyond a year or two. I recall a story a while back of someone living 80+ years on insulin...even if a cure doesn't come...this still gives me hope .
