Diabetes UK advert

Well I must say I certainly am not encouraged to donate to diabetes for advertising such scare mongering stuff... I have only been diagnosed recently and must say all this "progressive disease" and " you may have long life still even with diabetes" is discouraging and didn,t really give me the fighting spirit. I'm only 34 and would like to have a long and full life (with my feet and eyes thank you very much) and have desided to fight the hardest I can. But being told by my gp that reaching bs levels of 7 and under is almost impossible. I have now done it (between 4 and 6.9) and so far maintaining very well and he is absolutely gobsmacked. So I'm not surprised that so many people find it impossible to reach safe bs levels... I think this site should be made a part of all the leaflets so people could see that with finding suitable choices for them wii minimise/eliminate the possibility of all the nasty side effects.

Links to many papers, have a look at the DCCT and UKPDS which are elderly now but contain statistics on diabetic complications etc.

DUK are trying to have their cake and eat it, quite literally. They are hyping up the increase in diabetes and using it to gain funding (from food and drug manufacturers) to tell diabetics to eat completely the wrong diet which ensures the progression.

IMO there are two factors, one being the reduction in the diagnosis criteria (a good thing since the earlier it is caught the earlier you can do something about it) and the other is the general recommendation of the Heart Healthy diet which triggers the genes for diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, such that everyone who was previously a carrier is now expressing the genes.

One authority claimed that despite Type 1 still being far less common than Type 2 the rate of increase was actually higher in some areas. What factor(s) may be causing that is as yet unknown.

Well Trink i stopped giving because of their advice. But their advice and my experience are at best somewhat different.

I suspect they aren't that bad if you're a Type 1 on insulin. For everyone else they're frightening.

If you want to support a diabetes charity I hear good things about the JDRF

The best diabetes adds were those in the 70's ands maybe 80's. Recall "Always going to the loo, always thirsty, always tired" then suggested diabetes. This was educational and not sensationalist,

I can't remember seeing those but I would have thought listing the symptoms much better for getting possible diabetics to check with their GP's rather than this scaremongering which is more likely to attract hyperchondriacs to the GP's surgery ( no offence to any hyperchondriacs ) rather than possible diabetics. :x :x

I was diagnosed as a hypochondriac when I was actually diabetic. That didn't work too well.

I recently encountered an advert on bill boards and in a newspaper, with the heading....

Diabetes. Beware the silent assassin.
The death certificate will say heart attack. It was really diabetes.

I do not know if this is meant to scAare older type 2's ?
But it scared me!!!I felt it was extreme and very distressing and an unreal exaggeration of the issues.

Does any one else agree ?

Note, please do not post your personal email address on the public board. You really do not want a million spam Emails generated through the internet!
