Diabetic care in the US

Hi All

I've spent the last hour reading through some of the info on this site, amazed at all the support people are providing to fellow diabetics and I've learnt a few things already! For anyone who stumbles on this post and is struggling with their diabetes, please post a message, there will undoubtedly be a load of people on here who can give you support and guidance. Pat yourselves on the back...

Briefly, I've been very well controlled over the last 27 years. I'm a type 1, injecting mixtard twice a day. Long term tests are typically low to mid 6's. No complications.

However, I am expecting to be sent to New York for 2 years at the end of 2013 and I'm keen to know about the standard of diabetic care in the US? Whilst I've travelled extensively and worked on and off in the US, I've never lived there and so am unsure how medication is obtained, whether I can continue to get my particular type of insulin (though I believe it's pretty common), blood testing strips, how the health insurance operates (my company will pay for this) - basically anything anyone can share would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Gary

I'm pretty sure that diabetes care in the US is good if you have a good insurance plan. If you don't, I suspect you are dependent on charity organisations. I do know that many diabetics in the US have no help.
There is an excellent US based forum, which I've been linked with for ages. Called TU Diabetesforum. I can't remember off hand the name of the web site, but it's something like Diabetes Hands Foundation. Look them up and ask them your questions. they are very supportive.
Of course Richard Bernstein is i Marmaronek, which is not far from New York, but he's very expensive and I believe the Insurance people rarely fund patients to see him

Hello

I know there is an American Diabetic site on line, so you could Google that and the members should be very knowledgeable on diabetes care in the USA. I have never been to the USA, but I wish you good luck and success with your new situation overseas.

Best wishes RRB :)
