ive been to Diabetic Nurse this morning who gave me a handful of leafets and print offs and she wieghed me and took measurement of waist

she also got a chart which im now confused about and she said that for my age i should be in the 40 brackets however im at 77 which is very poor ive no idea what this is ??

she has referred me to classes on Diabetes and also mentioned about Hypos and when she told me i said ive had these for over 2 yrs and last one was 4 weeks ago before i found out i am diabetic as no one told me at docs that i have had it since jan 2016 when ive had bloods taken

She also said that if it was up to her she would prescribe a monitor and strips but the doc may refuse so i have to wait for a call from her so not happy as 2 of the Hypos has been so bad my hubby and son has helped to bed as couldnt walk properly and shaky couldnt see properly and hot and sweaty scared me to death

Im still confused about my results too do you think i should request a copy of my blood results from docs

Im so Glad ive joined this forum and the nurse actually recommended me to join as she said they get a lot of info from here x
 
Well nurse sounds fairly switched on.
Yes, I would ask for detailed printout of your results. Have a look at them, anything you don't understand ask your DN or GP and if still not clear ask here.
You can never ask too many questions when it's your body that's being discussed.
 
I think you need two things.

A print out of your test results so you can see for yourself where you are. These will contain other things apart from glucose levels, such as cholesterol, lipids, kidney & liver functions and full blood counts. They are important. Anything you don't understand you can ask us.

A blood glucose meter is essential for you as you are having these hypo feelings. Without a meter you have no idea what your blood sugars are doing when you feel like that. Most of us type 2s have to buy our own. They become our best friends and really help us understand what is happening and how our food choices can cause problems.
 
i cut down to low carbs up to 75 per meal and tea and 15 to 30 in snacks my levels are just right sticking with the carbs
 
Hi SueDaisy ! Do you know what the measurement was that you refer to ?
Keep reading the forum and asking questions so that you can work out what may be causing the low blood sugars. You have to get a blood glucose meter and I would insist on one because you are on insulin. Do you drive? If so there is a legal requirement to have one too!

I think this may be a glitch in the forum as I don't see insulin dependent anywhere. This has been a problem for a couple of years, whereby some see it and some don't, and of those that see it, half the time it is wrong! I just went by her medication in her profile.

Maybe @Suedaisy can confirm, one way or the other?
 
Hi Ive been back to Docs to see Nurse about another matter and while there i mentioned my confusion about them results she has explained and also give me a print out for them as below and said i am so scared as i dont understand whats happening inside my body and that i feels so let dowwn by the surgery i was in tears she has also made me appoint for 2 weeks so i can read all info they have given me and see how i am

Haemoglobin A1c level 68.0 mmol/mol this is from Oct 2017
Haemoglobin A1c level 77.0 mmol/mol this is from Mar 2018
she said that i should be below 48mmol/mol

My Fasting Glucose Plasma for Mar 2018 came back as 11.0 mmol

I am on Metformin Tablet 500mg twice a day

im so glad i have you all to help me x

Having hypos when just on Metformin is very unusual so Reactive Hypoglycemia as a specific diabetes condition comes to mind. I think you need to suggest to your DN that having hypos when just on Metformin is not normal (have a look at the RH forum on this website). I have no idea what your DN was talking about when she discussed your 77 reading; most strange.

A big welcome to the forum from me too. Don't despair -- a lot of us had a lot higher blood sugar levels than you, and have been able to get back to normal levels and get off all medication. On diagnosis, my HbA1c was 100, so a lot higher than yours and now my HbA1c is in the normal range.

When you felt dizzy, shaky, hot and sweaty, you could also have been experiencing a false hypo. A false hypo feels like a real hypoglycemic event, but it is brought on when your blood sugars fall below the levels your body has gotten used to. For example, if your blood sugars are normally around 10 mmol and they drop down to 6 mmol (which is actually in the normal range), your body reacts as if your blood sugar levels are dangerously low and tries to bring them up back to 10. However, it does feel like a real hypo to you.

This is why it is important to have a blood glucose meter -- it will tell you whether your blood sugar levels are really too low (below 3.9 mmol) and you're experiencing a real hypo or if it is still in the normal range, but just lower than usual.

Take your time, have a read around and keep asking questions. There are bunches of knowledgeable, helpful and friendly members on this forum, who will be eager to help.
 
Having hypos when not on any glucose lowering medication is not typical of type two diabetes - the nurse should have been suspicious about that - but if you can get hold of a meter then you can check your blood glucose and see how low you are - or not, as the case may be.
By eating a low carb diet my Hba1c dropped to 41 in 6 months - and as I am almost 67 years old I don't think it is anything age related, just determination to have normal readings.

You can change the "insulin dependent" by going to your profile settings. Look at your name at the top right of the screen, hover over it and a drop down box appears. Click on "personal details". Look on there for "type of diabetes". Another drop down appears. Choose "Type 2". Do not click on "insulin dependent". It makes a huge difference to the responses you will get, because you are not on insulin.
 

This means you are well inside the range for diabetes. Your nurse is correct that you should be under 48 mmol/mol for the HbA1c. The fasting glucose plasma should be under 7.

Please try not to worry. You can turn this round, but it will require changing your diet and substantially lowering your carbohydrate intake. This means foods such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, breakfast cereals, pastry and also fruit. You definitely need a blood glucose meter to help you with this.

The most popular meters for self funding T2's are the Codefree and the Tee2 because the strips are much cheaper than other meters, and you need a lot of strips. You can't buy them in pharmacies.

I think I have a lot to learn and I've already bought brown bread and pasta but not sure about fruit tho
I do agree that I need a monitor as I don't know what's happening at moment x
 
Do be very careful - as a type two diabetic any bread and pasta is likely to push up your blood glucose - most fruit will do the same thing - maybe stick the bread in the freezer, put the pasta in the back of the cupboard and eat small amounts of fruit as a dessert - with cream as long as it is fairly low carb.
 

Oh dear I do have a lot to learn as I thought they would be ok x
