Diabetic clinic

Oh dear I do have a lot to learn as I thought they would be ok x
It's what we're tought, so of course you thought it'd be okay. And for people whose pancreas works properly/aren't insulin resistant, it fairly is, up to a point. I didn't find this place until a year after my diagnosis, so I had to figure my diet out by myself. (Saw 2 dieticians, neither at home with low carb and my intolerances). Took me 3 months to sort out a low-carb diet on my own, with the help of books and google. This place'll help you get your head around it a lot faster! With a meter you'll soon find out what spikes you. But most carby foods will. Fruit (save for berries), potatoes, rice, bread, corn, cereal/wheetabix, root vegetables, anything with grain and or sugar... Avoid completely or cut back drastically, if you want to go that route. Your meter'll let you know how much, if any, is okay. How much we can handle is different for everybody. You don't have to figure it out overnight, just browse the forum, learn as you go. Good luck!

The meter is good news, but only for a short time, and most likely insufficient strips. It sounds like you will have to consider self funding.

The educational courses usually have long waiting lists, so don't hold your breath! If I remember correctly mine was scheduled a good 6 months after my diagnosis.

Don't be too heartbroken about the NHS education sessions - the pair who did mine were about as useful as a chocolate teapot and by the third one I was no longer diabetic anyway - to their complete bewilderment I am pleased to say.
I can be a bit wicked now that I am getting older but feeling younger.
Low carb eating was the way for me - hopefully you'll find a solution too.
Having a BG meter is a great help in finding out what you can eat.
