Diabetic drugs and severe muscle pain

Hi I'm new here. I've been type 2 diabetic for over 7 years controlled by diet. The last two my HbA1c has been steadily rising. I've tried Metformin SR, Gliclizide, Actos and Januvia in that order. After 7 to 10 days on each drug I develop severe muscle pain, 7/10 on the pain scale, which calms down a few days after I stop the drug. I normally have trouble with muscle/joint pain but not to this extent. The pain is 24/7 and only very strong pain killers (Fentanyl patch) give me any releif from the pain. Has anybody else experienced this?

Hi Buzzylizzie

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 27 years but a few weeks ago i woke up with a bad pain in my right hip i just carried on with my day and took a pain killer which did'nt really help. The next day it was the same but by the night it seemed to have got worse, i tried a pain killer with a muscle relax in it thinking that would relieve it, but by 5am the next morning i was in agony whatever i did, what ever way i lay or sat it was agony by 7pm that evening my hubby had to take me to a emergency doctor, he gave me an anti inflammitry injection and some tablets and since then its gone, he also sent me for a X-Ray (no result yet) I don't know if it was caused by the diabetes or not but i had the same sort of pain in my knees a couple of years ago and was told by my G.P it was a pulled ligament which i find hard to believe as i don't really do any sport only walking.
It seems that the drugs you were given had some effect on your body, its a funny thing this diabetes sometimes, hope you get it sorted.

I was diagnosed with a numb sensation in my right thigh. It did not bother me then, but I thought I should get it checked. That developed into pain, particularly on trying to get out of bed, when I was put on simvastatin. The pains went away for a time when I stopped taking it. Dr tried me with niacin for cholesterol, & within 3 weeks the pain was returning, & my fasting BS went up from about 6.7 to 7.2.

I've been using metformin for 5-6 years, but that doesn't seem to cause any problems. 2 years ago the background muscle pains became intense, making it very painful to get out of bed. At that time I joined this forum. Reducing the carbs has cleared the pain & restored my active life.

It seems to me that the muscle sensation that sent me to the Dr for diagnosis is an early warning system for the adverse effect of any drug or food-stuff, & it intensifies if there is an adverse reaction.
