wonder it some of you could help out,

A work friend set up a hamper company last year that promotes local produce, she have been ask to put together a hamper for a diabetic and has asked my advice on what she could put in it. ( she has already been told by the customer no diabetic chocolates) .

I have suggested she try and find out if the recipient is type 1 or 2 and if they are a low carb or not. I'm after any idea for her but mainly low carb options as although i cut down on carbs I can still tolerate them and would be over the moon to get a hamper with cheese, savory biscuits and yummy cheese scones.

so what would be a luxury low carb treat.

thanks in advance

i want a cheese scone now with a slice of butter on

My hamper heaven would include:
unusual cheeses
Garlic or jalapeno stuffed olives
quails eggs
asparagus with hollandaise sauce
or perhaps a really nice fillet steak

Certainly nothing that resembles cadburys or galaxy which would have me salivating for hours!

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Firstly, nothing with 'Diabetic' in the description.

Secondly, need to know the diet preferences of the proposed recipient.
Some people who low carb don't like high fat options although others swear by them.

[Edit - can we assume that this request is not from a diabetic but from someone who wants to buy a present for a diabetic?]

Need to know how long the hamper is expected to last between packing and delivery, then delivery and consumption. SHelf life of fresh foods may limit the choice.

Hmm.....probably nothing meat related and uncooked....

Include:

Tasty cheese - all sorts of nice ones, including little wheels of cheddar and Wensleydale.
Some nice ham.
Smoked salmon.
Pate (not goose liver) could be nice.
Cold chicken if it will be consumed quite quickly.
Potted game
Minature whisky (single malt?)
Plain chocolate (70%-80% coacoa solids)

If it is a fresh produce locally sourced for immediate delivery and consumption, then
all vegetables grown above the ground apart from sweetcorn
all fresh meats
bacon
sausage (over 95% pork)

Exclude:

Preserves such as jam
Honey
Bread/cake/biscuit
Puddings including christmas pud, minced pies (in fact any fruit pies)
Pasta or anything else wheat based
Sweets
Soft drinks - in fact any fruit drinks

If it is a fresh produce hamper
anything grown below the ground (potatoes, parsnips etc.) - carrots may be an exception
Fresh fruits apart from berries - lemons yes oranges no

Hopefully this begins to paint a picture.

Cheers

LGC

Can't do the chocolate Hobnobs - one is never enough but agree with the Fois Gras and caviar with perhaps some grated black truffle on the fois Gras!

Fois gras is so cruel, can you imagine being force fed. Leave it out, even some of our chefs refuse to use it.

most produce she use's in not fresh, it's preserves, cheeses. whistable oyster crisps etc

Ah but method in my madness. It would allow some nice carby things in the hamper not normally allowed as presumeably its like any other hamper and should contain some nice stuff. What better than to be able to include stuff we can't normally have a lot of. You would just need to stick a label on the carby things with "must be consumed with a nice G&T" written on them - slimeline tonic of course :D

My favourite 'nice carby treat 'at the moment are small macarons, like these
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=macaro ... 80&bih=713

One has somewhere between 5 and 8 g carbs
They are far too expensive for every day.
As a T1 they don't require much extra insulin... indeed none at all for me after exercise but they also go well with berries for a dessert.(not with a G&T though)

I think that is important so that food isn't wasted or unappreciated.

+1 I agree.

I would like lots of different cooked meats and lots of soft cheese to make little parcels when I have a snack attack. With lots of cheese. Yum.

Sure I could fit one of those in! Great idea with berries and cream for dessert.
