Diabetic/insulin passport

I saw my GP today and he has given me a small card, size of my medical exemption card and told me it is a diabetic passport. Has anybody else heard of this ?
 
I have a credit card sized card which is my prescription exemption card. Are you in the UK? Maybe thats what he meant. I show it to get free prescriptions and eye test.

Yep, the pharmacist rang my surgery and told the staff there that unless I produced and insulin passport when I collected my insulin they would not provide me with insulin :twisted: So I suggested the receptionist what she could say to said pharmacist.
It's voluntary, many have been given the card and just binned them from what I can gather.
 
We were given the insulin passports about 3 weeks ago when we had a check up with the DSN.

We were told it is to ensure that we are given the right insulin and that should we collapse, it identifies the insulin we use. I know all the info is fed into a database and so should you end up in hospital, it's all there.

I think it's an excellent idea.

Well, to an extent, sure. It will eliminate errors where people are given a wrong prescription and don't or are unable to check their medication before taking it, and make errors where the pharmacist dispenses the wrong insulin less likely.

On the other hand, I don't see the benefit of the emergency services knowing what kind of insulin you take - if you're unconscious and unable to communicate, then knowing that you take Lantus and Humalog won't do anything because they'll have to put you on a sliding scale anyway.
 
I've also got an insulin passport. Personally I think it is a waste of space, I already carry a card stating I have insulin dependant diabetes, I also carry my prescription exemption card and I always have full kit with me, insulin etc. why on earth do I also need an a4 piece of paper folded up with my medication details on it? I really can't see the point. I am sure someone out there will find a perfectly good reason I should carry it, but I'll take some convincing.
 
Just got mine, completed the information myself, It's not very official but may be useful for travelling or collecting insulin from a new Pharmacy I guess.
 
Not got one yet but wonder what happens if you change insulin ?or is it a self written type card :?: :?:
 
Mine came from the DSN and she filled in the information, all I had to do was put an emergency contact number on it. If you change insulin you are given a new card.

I carry a card stating that I am an insulin using diabetic too and anything that helps the medics is fine by me. It has my NHS number on and it's a way of tracking down my medical records. At the end of the day all of this will help me.

What's the problem with carrying the passport with you, it's only the size of a credit card ?

Yes credit card sized, mine was Novo Nordisk branded with a picture of an Insulin Cartridge, I had the option of writing my Background insulin in 'other medication' or having two cards.
