Hi everyone, my name is Jorge I am Brazilian , not fluent in English , so I apologize for my ( google ) bad english . I have doubts about diabetic ketoacidosis and decided to create this topic because I have not found anything about this forum or in other busiest .

I do not know if " diabetic ketoacidosis " is the correct translation , but if you have diabetes you probably know what it is . I have diabetes since 14 years , now I'm 19 and I have always suffered from ketoacidosis .
It is a very annoying problem , I know that it is caused by the blood glucose inconstacia , the blood becomes acid releasing ketones , ammonia and a series of implications .
SOON TO THE POINT , I was wondering if there any medicine which can be purchased at the pharmacy , food or any other method than going to the hospital to take whey , since the composition of serum that contains the doctors prescribe me potassium chloride and sodium to replenish electrolytes lost to my body . At home I try to take tea with salt water and gatorade type drinks , anything that helps a lot.
Ketoacidosis me also of severe abdominal pain, is this normal?

That was my doubt , enjoying the post for one more quick question: I take besides insulin started shortly take a medicine called roacutam , called acutam out of Brazil where , ya know if you have any interference in my diabetes? My aunt is a nurse and said he lowers my immunity is low already.

Thank you for your time, dedication and answers will be of great value to me.

the clever people are in bed and will answer you tomorrow,
as you know, the best way is the correct dose of insulin to keep your blood glucose under control.
I know the meter blood strips are dear in Brazil. what I've seen some people here do is use and is blood accurate is

you can cut one strip lengthways into 4 or 5 small strips and it works out cheaper

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency and should not be the default state for years. If you repeatedly get diabetic ketoacidosis, you need to find a different doctor (and sue your current doctor for criminal negligence) and take more insulin.

Hi. Ketoacidosis normally occurs when you have both very high blood sugar and you are in 'Ketosis'. Ketosis is when the body is burning fat because it no longer has any carbs to access. Ketosis is OK but Ketoacidosis is dangerous. What is your blood sugar level like? Does your diet contain some carbs. Normally having the right amount of insulin keeps the blood sugar right and Ketoacidosis (DKA) can't happen so I'm surprised you suffer from it

the strips are really expensive, but from this year could handle them for free by the public health system, including syringes that are now of good quality.

I do not think the doctors are much needed after a long time that I already know the disease, my first doctor never told me that when I had abdominal pain and vomiting would be because of DKA, I was angry with her. Doctors also not helped very close, I think the problem really is me, I know the risks and consequences and keep neglecting me sometimes.

Hey Jorge and welcome !

Sadly neglecting the most important person in the world - you, is not ideal, if you can try to avoid drinking Gatorade, it's a high sugar drink, the best thing you can have when you're running high is water to help the kidneys flush the glucose out of your system, so taking more sugar is going to send you in the wrong direction.

It sounds like having type 1 diabetes is very rare in Brazil ?

If you can try and leave out sugars and foods that are high in carbohydrates and eat more salads, meat, fish, not processed food then that's a start. Eating things like chips, rice, bread, pasta are high in carbohydrates so will send your blood high, how about doing a food diary and logging the insulin doses you are taking ? Recording information is a good starting point to understanding what sends you high.

Thanks for the advice.
I understand what you said about the food, I try to eat my healthy home cooking with brown rice and salad, but for lack of time I end up eating a lot at Subway which is in front of my house, it's healthy, right?
In this case I took gatorade because of potassium, really do not know if it was a good choice, later I had taken enough mate tea that also contains potassium. I created this post when I was with DKA, last night, after tea and force vomiting I feel a little better now.

Today I take 25 units of NPH insulin in the morning and 25 at night, is far from my peak when I practiced jiu jitsu, taking only 20 throughout the day.

Here in the UK we would treat DKA in hospital. Your lost electrolytes, including potassium, would be replaced intravenously in hospital.

If you are treating yourself for DKA all alone that is not good. But if you have no choice there is a specific protocol you need to follow. This involves very frequent blood tests and ketone tests, and higher than normal infections of insulin. When you have ketoacidosis you need extra insulin just to remove the ketones, otherwise your blood sugar will not come down.

The best way to deal with DKA is to prevent it. That means keeping your blood sugar in a good range. And never ever stop taking insulin, for any reason. Keep your insulin cool to make sure it does not go bad. Hot insulin becomes useless, permanently ruined, and you will then get DKA.
