Diabetic Maculopathy Worries

Hi,

I got a letter this morning following my eye screening that said 'Your test result showed signs of diabetic maculopathy' and 'Please don't be alarmed...' for the first time, had background retinopathy ones before.

Unfortunately I am very much alarmed. I've not had great BG control for a number of years, I posted about this on here 14(!) years ago here: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/finding-it-tough.31407/ (surprised I managed to remember my account)

Anyway long long story short it turns out I have OCD and for the last year a chronic pain problem i'm hoping that will get resolved but I think these plus the above have contributed to me being really stressed about this letter and worrying about going blind; my head tells me the rational thing to do is just to start today as day 1 and try to bolus for my food correctly, count carbs etc and I really want to, but then the other side of me, probably the OCD side is wondering if going from bad -> good too quickly is going to make my eyes worse.

Reading that last sentence out loud doesn't seem to make much rational sense but here we are, how could bad to good be bad.

Does anyone have an outside perspective on what this letter means or whether i'm just overthinking what I should do.

Thanks!

I can't help with your OCD, but I had one of those letters and had a bit of a meltdown, was refered to the hospital for further tests, yes it was there but minor and no treatment needed. I've been monitored for about 18 months, in which time it's resolved itself and have now been signed back to the community team

Hi,

“Diabetic maculopathy” is what was once called macula oedema when I was first diagnosed well ove 10 years ago? They changed the title 5 years back when going for scans..

I’ve had treatment but not needed for about 7 years? Pretty happy with the result.

If it gives you any comfort.
I still hold a valid driving licence. & sight improved to the point I don’t need “accessibility” on my devices anymore.
