Hi I have been attending the diabetic clinic for the past three years and was always told blood sugar was good etc ,but one day I went in and her attitude to me completely changed ,as soon as I entered the door she told me that I was going to die in a couple of years as my results weren't very good and that I was going on medication which would make me feel full and a bit bloated but that was a good thing as it would stop me eating a lot ,she was quite nasty ,I was already depressed as had just given up job after trouble there so I nearly had a breakdown ,went to see my doctor and told him what had happened but she denied ever saying that to me ,well now I don't want to go back anymore and in fact after going
back once more I have missed my next appointment any suggestions on how I can get around this fear of the nurse thing that's going on

Hi.
One option is to attend the Surgery on the provision that you request not to see that particular person. It's your right.
Secondly, consider a change of practice altogether.
Think of yourself as having an impenetrable shield around you, and simply nothing can penetrate it or hurt you.
Inevitably in life we meet negative people, often they criticize or dislike you because they identify something with something in you they don't like about themselves and take it out on you.
Smile always. It's remarkable the effect it can have on those around you, you can change a persons entire day with a compliment.
Consider one last point I offer to you, if I said 9 great things about you to your face then said something horrible, which do you walk away and remember?
Think of negativity deservedly requiring a kick in the balls whenever it presents itself.
Best wishes:D

Is the nurse still there? If she is then ask to see another nurse and explain your reasons why (if we are talking about a hospital diabetes clinic). There's no need for anyone to be nasty so she was bang out of order.

I guess the nurse was having a bad day. Her nasty comments were totally uncalled for. I suppose said nurse didn't tell you what the "not very good" results were. Many of us, including me, insist on having a printout of our blood test results after each appointment. That way we can see whether we are keeping things under control. You could ask a receptionist to arrange printouts of all your test results to date.

At our Health Centre we have two nurses who monitor Diabetic patients. Is there another nurse you could see?

I think she was bang out of order, wicked person, fancy talking to a patient like that. Complain to the practise manager and don't see her again.

If you have to see her due to being the only nurse, or being with good gp's, then consider taking anybody as a chaperone in the future, and when you go in, explain why.

You're receptionist should be able to print off a full blood test report for you before your appointment. Then at least you can be prepared.

It is worthwhile formalising a complaint to the Practice Manager. I have done this. The mere fact that you are willing to put it in writing, should also be mentioned in the complaint. Gp Practices have to monitor complaints and they should have their complaints procedure online and advertised in the Practice.

By the end of this year, they have to bring in friend and family tests in gp practices, so in the future you can also answer these questions with honest answers.... Gp's haven't been told yet how this will be working..

It may be that Practices by the end of the year will have to be a lot better with their attitudes of certain staff towards patients....i hope so.

Thank you for your answer I will take it on board

. . . . she told me that I was going to die in a couple of years as my results weren't very good and that I was going on medication which would make me feel full and a bit bloated but that was a good thing as it would stop me eating a lot ,she was quite nasty.
Wrong in so many ways and I'm sorry to hear it. You have the upper hand because you haven't sunk to her level and I have a feeling that she wouldn't behave like that again anyway. What to do is always so much easier to decide when you've had time to think about it. I had a similar experience seventeen years ago with an endocrinologist at High Wycombe General (names, no lawyers required LOL). He didn't ask me what exercise I did, what food I ate and just proceeded to have a go at me for being fat and lazy and eating too many take aways. Evidently he had had a patient who was like that so we must all be the same. The PILLOCK.

One thing I have noted in my old age is that losing your rag doesn't do any good, but keeping your cool really pisses people off and there's nothing they can say. If I were to be in a situation where somebody I was going to for advise started having a go, I would very calmly get up and walk up and apologise by saying "I'm so sorry, you seem to have mistaken me for somebody else". Basically what I should have done 17 years ago.

Good Luck

A smile gors a long way too!! Nothing bears smiling at a person when they have a go at you!!! Its brilliant.. It really un nerves them, they'll ask if you're lustening and gives you the opportunity to say "no I'm not" and get your side over...

Whatever people expect in life when they are ranting etc is that you are going to go away miserable and angry. This "smile" stops them!! It is hard to do though, but practice makes perfect!!
