As a prediabetic I don't see a DN yet and I only have yearly fasting blood tests but last time my GP thought although I am not yet T2 it would be a good idea to see the DN who is part of our doctors practice working at the surgery for some advice. My fasting two consecutive tests were 6.9 and 6.8 so the DN said as I am not yet T2 I did not need to see her on a regular basis but she did say that depending on my blood test results in the future if I becomeT2 I might need medication which she said my doctor would prescribe for me So what I did find strange is that it seems that some of your DN's put you on medication without your GP's say so I don't think I would be happy with that and would want the ok from my doctor first I thought only doctors could prescribe medication

My dn did change my insulin over a few yrs ago , she herself has a diabetic hubby and believed the twice daily injections i was on needed to be changed as did i, my gp thought i was doing great,he believes a hba under 9 to be good for a type 1 which is rubbish talk so my dn put her views forward and did me a script for mdi,
as long as u feel happy with what is being asked that is what counts, some dns are rubbish whereas mine is a lot more knowledgable than my gp in diabetes

Hi. Some nurses are prescribing nurses so can issue prescriptions. My DN did all my insulin scripts and changed my tablets; also ordered my blood tests

At my surgery they are general practice nurses, they are the ones that do baby injections and asthma clinic. I have no wish to see them at any time. I have to see one once a year as part of my annual review, and there is one I have taken a dislike to her manner that I won't see. Any discussions I need to have about my levels or medication I talk to my GP about.

In our practice they have 1 so called diabetic nurse and me and her do not get along at all. If I have any problems I speak to the diabetes clinic at the hospital. I have to have a review with practice every 3 months because of they issue my prescriptions, but they keep interfering with my treatment from the hospital

My DN was excellent. No problems changing my prescriptions, and just wrote a letter to my doctor saying what was happening. Sadly going due to nhs cuts. A different practice nurse at the doctors also reviews my meds, but has to run it past the doctor before cutting them,

There are DN and there are DSN, a DN as far as I'm aware is just a practise nurse that also specialises in diabetes, a DSN on the other-hand is a diabetes specialist nurse who specialise in all things diabetes related.

There are nurse practitioners who have trained to be able to prescribe medications. They have done training in a University. This link is a typical course.

This is from the RCN explaining about the role of Nurse Practitioners.

Thanks all
I know the nurse at our surgery is one of the general practise nurses so don't know if she is a DSN to or just a DN
She just asked me about my diet I told her I was low fat that I ate plenty of vegetables and fruit and didn't really eat much in the way of starchy carbs and high sugar foods so she said that was fine no weight problem and just to carry on with what I was doing... at least she did not tell me to eat lots of carbs like I have heard some DN's do

DSN's normally work in hospitals rather than gp practises, anyway it sounds like you have a good DN there by what you say:)

My DN who I trained in LC benefits has left so next time I'll have to start again :(
