Diabetics R Us

The rams in my garden, Baby and Tajep, seem pretty well behaved, although they seem to think they know much more about feeding chickens than I do and try to show me all about it when I walk by with chicken feed. But I haven't been head-butted yet :)

Evening all

Had a disturbed night last night so didn't get up till 7.30 this morning. We went for a walk along Dover prom and then shoe shopping for Alan, had a quick trip to Lidl for a couple of bits then came home and did some crochet. We managed to get home just before the rain started and we've had some heavy rain & hail this afternoon.

Are party colors something new in the House of Commons? I watched Prime Minister's Questions tonight (session from last Wednesday) and it seemed like everyone on the Conservative side was wearing a blue suit or tie or dress, while many members on the Labour side were wearing red dresses or ties.

I haven't watched PMQT in more than 10 years and I don't remember seeing so much color-coding on either side of the House before.

Morning all

The boss is back from his skiing trip today so no doubt there'll be a panic to do the work that should have been done last week

Have a good day.

H :)

Oh My Days! I have just discovered quite by accident that my Hue Light One (wifi controlled lights) work in the same way as an Alexa or Ciri thingy! Isn't technology wonderful? I have been messin' around and now I can pronounce Rekiavik like a native. I still have to learn how to spell it though :D.

Some of them still wear the 'Old School Tie'.

How do you view PMQs? I sometimes think they act like rabble at times. The scenes from other parliaments seem very sedate in comparison except when one MP thumps another.

I really enjoyed watching it. I learned a lot about politics, including that I wished our (US) Senate and House of Representatives did the same thing and that the president had to meet with them and take questions one day a week. It also added a whole new dimension to my knowledge of James Oglethorpe (founder of the colony of Georgia, my home state). In school we learned only "General Oglethorpe." When I later learned that he was also an MP, it gave me an additional perspective on him.

Does your POTUS never meet with elected members by choice or is there a history of Presidents never doing this? How would he get a feel of the state of opinion of those members (and the voters) if he is not challenged on policy?

I was interested in the 'State of Emergency' thing but couldn't get my head around all the machinations.

Neither could I! lol.

I know that the president addresses both houses (Senate and House of Representatives) once a year when he gives the State of the Union Address (also shown live on TV), but I don't know about meeting with them at other times. Now you've got me wondering, and I will go look it up and get back to you. :)

I used to occasionally try to watch sessions of Congress on TV back when I was watching PM's Qs but it was so boring I gave up (and then lost cable TV anyway).

The president doesn't meet with Congress the same way the PM meets with the House of Commons, since the president isn't a member of Congress and -- as far as I can tell -- neither are any members of his staff. The presidency is a whole different branch of the government from Congress -- the presidency is the Executive Branch; Congress is the Legislative Branch. They are legislators; the president is the Chief Executive. AFAIK he sends them "executive communications."

That is really all I have been able to find out. I would imagine he is all too aware of what different congressmen/women and senators think through some sort of grapevine of his advisors. The current president is said to Tweet a lot, so maybe he (or his advisors) read politicians' Tweets as well.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to be of more help. :)

I do think it's interesting that "Congress" has its roots in a Latin word meaning to meet or walk together, and a meeting of opposing forces, while "Parliament" is related to "parley" and is about speech, debate.

P.S. -- I did just find this:

He [President Obama] did constant outreach to Congress: one-on-one meetings … the perception is so different from the reality. The first four months, we had cocktail parties every Tuesday or Wednesday at the White House until every senator and House member who was willing to come had participated. The president and the first lady usually met 30 folks at a time, the president also had private lunches, small-group meetings, and phone calls. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ongress/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.1644c449ce99

Thank you. Interesting stuff.

Good morning Duckies, is that a bit o' sunshine I spy?

Have a great day.

Yes, sunny and cloudless here, with still a bit of pink glow on the horizon. I hope you are having a great first day of Spring. When I looked out the window yesterday morning it seemed as if most of the trees had suddenly turned green from grey. Now the hardwoods are green as well as the conifers and magnolias.

You have to be quick to catch it. It is coming and going, but at least no wind or rain, and much warmer.

The better light levels definitely have a good affect on my mood, I've even been toying with the idea of getting someone to do the spring cleaning. I will have to ease that someone into it I think!

We get to vote twice today in the Netherlands. Provinciale Staten and Waterschap, both local politics, so I'm off to the 'stembureau' :)

Good luck on the water vote ...

I also Googled "stembureau" and I think I could read this:
Bij de meeste stembureaus is parkeren met een gehandicaptenparkeerkaart --

"Most ----- offices have handicapped parking spaces"?

I'm doing mine at the moment. I can't do too much all at once these days. I'm just having a little sit down before tackling the bathroom. I do like it when it is all sparkling. Shame it doesn't last more than a day or two in this household.

I break my cleaning up into stages too, these days.
