Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hello, I`ve been diabetic for over 20years now and still on tablets although I think I am now at the max I can have. Metformin 850mg x3, Gliclazide 80mg x4 , and have now been added Januvia 100mg x1 daily (Still have to start these) also taking other meds because of my stomach which I am having some really bad problems of pain and bloating. I have also been diagnosed with IBS ( as they can`t find whats wrong)and ASD (Aspergers) this makes eating a nightmare for me. I have seen all the lovely meals, they look nice but I can`t eat most of them. I have problems with taste, smell and texture of foods and I can`t eat anything like pastry or oily foods which means also all ready made foods and such are out. I`ve got to a point where I don`t want to eat and there are only a few foods that I will eat happily (not healthy) doctors aren`t really understanding or helpful and seeing the dietician they just say `you need to eat this, this and this and I just can`t. Really despretly needing help.

What foods are you happy eating @whitemoon ?

As you've been diagnosed with Aspergers, have you been offered any extra support with that and how it affects your eating? There could be help available, but you may have to push for it.

How are your blood sugars? If you're unable to eat much, how is your weight?

Welcome to the forum. Feel free to ask as many questions as you want:)

@whitemoon - I can relate to not know what to eat as I have to be careful too because of other health conditions. I also have IBS-D. The problem with IBS-D I find is eating food tends to trigger it. When it's really playing up I have to be careful to not eat vegetables and fibre because I wind up in more pain. I find it a real juggling act trying to please everything to be honest. In fact I haven't figured out how to please everything and no matter what I eat I upset something. I'm having to eat soft foods at the moment because my digestive tract has been so upset with the infection I've currently got going on.

You say you've been type 2 for 20 years, have you had a GAD and c-peptide test done at all again? I'm just wondering because you say you're on maximum dosages of meds and that is where I was at and things weren't working too well before they agreed to do the diagnostic tests again on me (the ones I mentioned above). As it turns out I hardly produce any insulin anymore so I have to be on full time insulin therapy. My endo took me straight off oral meds when he got this result at beginning of 2010. I've been on insulin ever since. It may be something worthwhile checking out if you haven't already. I was diagnosed in 1998, so not too far behind you.

I wish you the best. :)

Hi and welcome. Do look at the diet advice on these forums but obviously you need to take account of your IBS etc. Can you let us know your weight or BMI. As you are on max dose of tablets (same ones I was on before insulin) it's possible you might be a Late onset T1 and not T2. This is most likely if you are fairly slim. The tests @Mep suggests would test for that. Are you on Metformin SR (Slow Release) version? If not do insist that the GP moves you to the SR version which is much kinder and avoids most of the bloating that the standard version commonly causes.

OMG! I wish I had written here before!! :D Thank you very much for all your info. well will reply to all questions here.

I am 5.6" tall and around 78kilo in weight I know I am overweight but not In the obese yet. on the rare occasions I am `deflated` I am a size 12 but can fluctuate up to a size 18. In the morning I am not too bad but by evening I look 6 month pregnant and very uncomfortable.
I have had the diagnoses of ASD in Feb (I had to fight for that!) but no support- doc suggested dietician again but I know they don't help.
foods, well I eat : tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, onion, potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, Brussels, meat, chicken, sausages (current fav atm) bacon, cereal, milk, bread, some pasta, cheese, butter, ricotta, eggs, nuts, not much really :( I end up eating same all the time.
Metformin I think I am on the normal ones as it just says Metformin 850mg
IBS feels like it is constant and just gets worse depending on how stressed I get. (Having ASD means I get stressed constantly even just going to get milk can be a trial and lets not talk about when I worked!! (currently carer for mum)
Tests I will decently as my doctor again!! (Will be printing all this off ) I only do the HBA1C on a yearly basis.

I also been told by my dentist that he thinks I was diabetic long before they diagnosed me at 21. As I have had root treatments and he had to use the drills that the use for kids (apparently as you get older the roots get thinner) My teeth also tent to snap! Anyone heard this before?

Thank you all so much for your warm welcome!! @Daibell @Mep and @azure

you'd only be type 1 though if your condition is auto immune - the GAD test will reveal that.

What type of IBS do you have? If you have the same as me you will find vegetables will irritate it as we're supposed to be eating less fibre in our diet. I had a craving for cabbage the other week and boy did it give me a lot of pain and the IBS played up.

The tests I mentioned will help you find out what your body is currently doing. If you were diagnosed type 2 over 20 years back then there are a couple of variables. 1) you may in fact be type 1.5 and have developed antibodies a few years after diagnosis (although I'd think you'd be in trouble by now if you were type 1.5 with just oral meds). 2) You are still type 2 and you either still produce insulin, you have insulin deficiency, or no insulin. Whatever the outcome you will find oral meds will be useless if you have insulin deficiency or no insulin regardless of whether or not you have auto-immune diabetes. I'm still type 2 myself but I just need insulin now to treat my diabetes. I have beta cell damage from the years of insulin resistance stressing my pancreas.

I wish you the best. :) Keep us updated.

That sounds like a pretty good selection of foods :)

If it makes you feel happier to eat the same things, could you devise some meaks that work for you, and then rotate them over a week? You've got more veg and salad there than many people eat :) That's a good foundation. You've also got sources of protein, so that's good too :) And some fats aswell.

Do you have a blood testing meter? It sounds like you might not? It can be a useful tool as it can show you how you react to certain foods and meals.

When you were diagnosed with the ASD, were you offered any help? If not, could you ask your GP?

I can see how stress makes your IBS worse. The only time I thought I had developed it was after a period of extreme stress. I was in pain most days and my tummy never felt right. For me, reducing the stress as much as possible, doing relaxation exercises, taking pro biotics, and concentrating on chewing very well and eating slowly helped a lot.

Hi. Your weight makes Late onset T1 less likely. Most of the foods you eat are quite good but I would go easy on the bread, cereals, pasta and root veg and they can be high in carbs which you need to keep down when you can. I hope you can get the GP to change your Metformin with IBS. He should already have done that as he will know there is a Slow Release version.

Not sure what type. was only told IBS. lol they keep telling me to eat more fiber as I can easily do 2 weeks not going and if I take laxatives then I end up I can`t go out as I get sharp pains and have to run!! everything and anything sets me off but pastry like pasty and oily things are the worst! Will run it passed my doctor as I got some blood tests this coming week and will then see him for the results and ask him about re testing. Been having problems for the last 10 years and they just keep upping my meds and I`m really tired now.
Will keep you all updated and thank you!

Its not a bad lot, I think it is more I don`t know what to do with it! and its not that I can`t cook either..... at the moment its like I`m eating a lot of sausages (processed) and like mini roast meals or chips :( some times I can go for weeks eating the same and then I can`t eat it any more or for a while. Or half way through a meal I just gag even though I was enjoying it. As for ASD no support though there is somewhere is Cardiff which might help so just need to find a day and go talk to them. Stress.... everything is stressing me even just breathing as I am having to struggle to get the help I need and then all the stupid things like changed from bt to sky and bt messed up one way and sky another and I was climbing up walls as just calling them was a nightmare :( GP will only look at the depression side of it. I am constantly battling depression from ASD and diabetes most likely but medication makes it worse. As for the meter I have one but my fingers are very painfull so don`t do it as much as I should but it is always high and takes ages to start going down after meals. I`m starving in the morning and eat a good dinner around 5-6, don`t eat much after that. Will give anything a try at the moment! Thank you for your suggestions :)

Does it make a difference where the weight is? with me its all around the middle and have skinny arms and legs hence the different sizes too as for example at the moment I am a 12 bottom and 14 top. Bread I don`t eat much just maybe 2 slices at lunch for meds, cereal only breakfast as is milk. pasta is not often either as mostly in broths. I will be looking at all the recipes here and hopefully find something I can maybe change to suit me. I will be asking my GP to first test me and then see about changing my metformin. Thank you very much for all your info! its a big help. Although I`ve been diabetic for so long I`m still not got my head around it properly and struggle.
Thank you
