Diagnosed at the pharmacy

Hi there,

I visited a chemist last week, as I had been feeling tired and drinking a fair bit. My Grandad had diabetes, so I thought it best to go and get myself checked out. I had the blood test, and the reading came back as 16 something or other. It is normally meant to be about eight something or other. I am afraid I am being a bit vague about all this.

Though it was not a complete surprise, it was still a bit of a shock I guess. I am to go and see the doctor on Tuesday to see what they say about things.

Anyway just thought I would say hi, and I am hoping to learn a great deal from this site.

Thank you for your welcome. This does indeed seem to be a very good site for information and support. I think that the first thing that sprang to mind was that I will have to make extreme alterations to my diet. I am not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, as I have been scoffing the sweeties for some time now.

I ignored the warning that came when I was told my blood pressure was getting on the high side. Now perhaps this is a bit of a wake up call to take some kind of positive action. :D

Clouds and silver lining come to mind.

Welcome. My diagnosis was the trigger to get my act together and my health is improving rapidly as a result. Take a look around and ask questions. Lots of good advice and support here.

You need to find a diet that works for you. Whatever approach you take, bringing your blood glucose levels down will mean a substantial reduction in the starchy carbohydrate that you eat. It isn't just the obvious sugar in the sweeties that is the problem with your blood glucose.

Hope the meeting with the doctor goes well.

Good luck with your doctor! Once he tells you what to do then come back here and let us know. Whatever you do, come back here anyway to learn how to manage your condition and keep away from the nasty complications that can come a diabetic's way.

I wish that I'd arrived at these forums before I was nearly nine years down the road.

Thank you all for your kindness. I went to the doctor this morning, and he has now made an appointment on Friday for me to take a glucose tolerance test. He told me that the pinprick test can sometimes be uncertain. Which ever way around this goes I am taking it as a wake up call about my diet.

It is good to be put in a position where I am thinking about what I am taking into my system, rather than just stuffing food into my face.

you did the right thing
Don't get your hopes up about the finger prick test being wrong. At 16, there's not much room for an error, which there could be on a borderline number.
Your GP is right to order an OGTT It is the only valid test for a diagnosis.
Come back and tell us the results and ask your next lot of questions
